Golf Finally Drops The Anchor, But Long Isn't Gone!! The most controversial rule change of this century is finally upon us and will affect many of you including me. Anchoring to the body is
no longer permitted.
Below are some shots of the rules you can adopt if you wish to continue to use your long putter:
- A long or belly putter can still be used providing your hands swing freely and you do not anchor the end of the club's grip against your body or intentionally hold the forearm of the top gripping hand against your body. (Pictures 1 & 2)
- It is permissible to hold your forearm against the side of your body to hit the putt, provided your hands are not separated and working independently from each other and the putter is swung freely. (Picture 3)
- You can adopt the
'side saddle' technique, putting facing the hole, provided your hands swing freely and you do not anchor the putter or hold your forearm against your body to create an anchor point. (Picture 4)
- You are however, permitted to hold the club against your hand or forearm provided the hands swing freely.
The forearm is defined as part of the arm below the elbow joint and includes the wrist.
This is the technique Matt Kuchar uses. (Picture 5)
Come and have a chat with us in the pro shop if you would like any advice on the best grip for your game, or

Aide and I were very busy over the festive period playing 10 matches and only losing just the 1, to the mighty pairing of
Mike Eames and
Steve Moore down the 19th. Our other matches were against
Paul Mantell &
Mike Simister, Howard Gleadow &
Dave Thomson, the
Gillespie brothers,
Tony Cullen &
Rick Arrowsmith, Bill Harrison &
Steve Hill Cousins, Steve Pullen &
John Brickwood, Drew Gibson &
Alan Barnes. Our last game was played over 12 holes because of the weather against
Alan Boucher &
Kevin Bloomfield with
Mark Diaper &
Darren Firth, which incredibly has been the only game that has been affected by the weather!
Once again can we thank all those that have played, all in a great spirit and your generosity with your contributions to the captain's charity. Our record now stands at played 23 won 20 lost 3. We look forward to the next 28 matches, hopefully in drier conditions.
Graham Light sent me this picture just before Christmas of his second shot on the 7th at Hockley, he thinned a 7 wood 2nd shot that didn't get up in the air quickly enough!
"What would you do in this situation?" Graham declared it as an unplayable lie and took a one shot penalty and dropped the ball within two club lengths, no nearer the hole, do you think he was correct?
Save 10% on the JRB clothing range and reductions have been made on FootJoy and Nike shoes.
