A spellbinding Sunday night, amazing golf from Danny Willett and the unbelievable hole in one from Louis Oosthuizen, who said golf was boring! It's incredible to think only two weeks ago Danny Willet was considering not playing in the tournament, but on March 30th his son arrived early and Danny Willett's life changed in more ways than one. His win was definitely 'written in the stars'. It was his wife's birthday, the day his son was due to be born and he shot 67, the same score as Nick Faldo did when he won 20 years ago. And to finish it off, his caddy wore the same number as Jack Nicklaus's caddy wore in 1986 when he won, spooky!
Congratulations to the winners of our Masters sweepstake.

The new membership bag tags will be available for collection from the Pro Shop from Monday, 18 April. We apologise for the delay, but due to the financial year end and a significant computer change-over at the club, this has resulted in a delay in the processing of payments.
Please keep the tag displayed on your golf bag in a prominent position.
Last Sunday saw the start of the Men's friendly season with the home leg of our annual match against Lee on the Solent.
Playing in blustery conditions, we made full use of home advantage in the morning 10 hole greensomes competition, and built up a healthy 6-1 lead with five wins and two halved games.
After a light lunch we resumed the match, and our tactic of plying the opposition with alcohol certainly seemed to do the trick.
With the wind getting stronger and our opponents starting to run out of steam, we came in 5½-1½ winners with five wins, one half and only one loss, and now take a commanding 11½-2½ lead to the return away leg in August.
Sunday's match was, as always, played in fantastic spirit and I thank the Lee on the Solent team for their generous contributions to the Captain's Charity.
Also many thanks to Jo and the team for the lunch at midday and the meal in the evening, and to Danny Francis for organising the day.
There are more Men's friendly matches throughout the summer and we are always looking for additional people to join in. Please enter your name on the sign up sheet above the PSI in the men's changing rooms if you wish to take part.
Adie Nicol Club Captain
Beckford Bowl Match v Lyme Regis GC
Hockley won the match 6.5 to 5.5.
In the morning we won 3.5 to 0.5, but remarkably and probably never seen again was Tom Hobbs and Aaron Giles 7 up on the 12th tee dormie, when their opponents then had 7 consecutive birdies to halve the match.
We now meet either Came Down or Ferndown in the next round.
There was an exceptional entry into the Tank Cup and Wells Trophy on Saturday and the winners of each were:
Tank Cup - Derek Noyce with a nett 66 Wells Trophy - Stephen Evans with a nett 66, beating Harry Herd on a countback.
16 Two's were scored, 2 by Declan Fahy, but only 4 winners in the two's competition.
HIGH POST - Continuing our "not winning streak" we duly lost our Summer friendly away to High Post on 5 April. High Post had arranged with the local air base for the match to be constantly buzzed by jet aircraft doing circuits and bumps, but the Hockley Team's resilience at least resulted in two halved games and a win in our 4:2 defeat!
Cottage pie and good old spotted dick followed with the usual sad humour from both captains!
Knighton Heath Knock-Out Trophy - Great news as Peter Betts' selected team beat last year's winners Meon Valley 7.5 to 2.5
Onwards and upwards > Hayling next on 10 May (only 2 days before our Summer "friendly" with Hayling!).
The ladies ran a very successful coffee morning on April 5th for 78 lady visitors. The raffle and produce stalls raised £422.27 for the Air Ambulance charity.
I would like to add a thank you to my team for taking all the calls, booking in the tee times and recording the payments. Also to all the Ladies that gave up their time to help on the day, it was very much appreciated.
Stoneham Cup
Hockley were up against a very strong team of players and the result was worthy of our players, especially given it was our first game of the season which was away to RWGC. All was resting on the last match which was nail biting, but alas we couldn't clinch another win, final result 4 and 3 to RWGC
Hezlet Match
Our team of Beth Goater, Chris Quinn, Judie Lewis, Sue Poulter and Kay Walshe won their match against Ferndown away 4/1. Beth had a good win 5 & 4. Chris 3 & 2. Judie 5 & 4. Sue unfortunately got deflated on the 7th by her opponent's eagle and then following with a birdie. Kay used member's bounces with relish then beautifully chipped in on 14th to secure her win on 15th.
Lovely weather and the course was great with greens playing nicely, and Judie used them to her advantage by one putting on the first few holes. Just as well as her opponent was twice her size and hit twice as far (OK - maybe slight exaggeration....) So putt for dough!
Friday, 15 April - Men's medal played from the white tees and enter on the day in the Pro Shop.
Saturday, 16 April - Men's Long Course Stableford played from the white tees and enter on the day in the Pro shop.
Ladies Stableford.
Monday, 18 April - Men's Short Course Stableford played from the yellow tees.
Monday, 2 May - Texas Scramble - The entry sheet is now up on the main notice board.
Come and try our Putters on Bank Holiday Monday from 10 - 3pm on the Putting green by the Shop. One of my staff will be on hand to give you some help and guidance, perhaps try your luck in the 'Longest Putt' challenge in aid of the Captains charity. |
