 Pros news

I must start by congratulating Scott Gregory from Corhampton GC on winning the British Amateur Championship, which was held at Royal Porthcawl GC last week. Scott held off a strong challenge from Scotland's Robert MacIntyre to seal a 2/1 victory in the 36-hole match.

His triumph secures him a place in The Open at Royal Troon next month, next year's US Open at Erin Hills and by tradition, an invitation to the Masters in 2017. I have known Scott for many years through Hampshire squad training, what an achievement and exciting times ahead for him.

Secondly to Dustin Johnson on his victory in the US Open. It's a pity that his victory and the final day's play also saw golf at its worst, with the farce over a possible rules infringement meaning that when Johnson finished, he didn't know what his score actually was.

Tip of the week

This week's tip follows on from last week's Hybrid tip, and focuses on maximising distance from the rough with a hybrid.

Competition news

Our team were successful against Petersfield GC 6-1 in the Hampshire 7's on Sunday and are now in the last 16 where they will play the winners of Bishopswood or Romsey.

We had 3 new debutants playing in Sean Dolphin, Anton James and 15 year old Laurie Tennant. There were large wins for John Fisher 7&5, vice-captain Nick Goater 6&5 and Sean Dolphin 6&4. Well done team.

President's Summer Scramble

A large field of members played an interesting and challenging course with several changes that they found both fun and needing careful thought. The weather proved to be ideal for golf, with the course in excellent condition thanks to all the hard work involved by Leigh and his team in the absence of Glenn for the week.

The winners thanked Bob and all those involved in organising the day.

Joan Jacomb was the guest of honour, and was invited to present the prizes and the coveted Jacomb Jugs to the winners.

The winners with an incredible 58 points were Dave Daish and Mike Black.

The winners of the Ladies 1st Prize were Polly Church and Ann Younger with 51 pts.

The junior's prize was won by Laurie Tennant and George Hoarton with 50 pts.

Rob and Vivian Stevens won the team prize with 107 pts.

Andy
and Angela Gradidge were runners up of the Men's/Mixed section with 55 pts, winning the prize on a count back, scoring 29 pts on the back 9, they were also part of the 'team' that included Rob and Vivian Stevens who won the team prize - but of course could only take one prize.

Sundays medal was won by Alan Wilson with a nett 66, and runner up was Trevor Luckman with a nett 67.

Ladies section

Ladies Captain's Day; weather forecast terrible; sleepless night praying for something better; early start to give breakfast to the three workers who set off at 5am (at least they had a dry round); greetings to Bob Stilwell looking dapper in white jacket and bow tie (thanks go to him and Derek Sheppard for starting the competition); up to the 11th to set up the refreshments, ably helped by Peter and Maggie Rees (still no sign of rain); first Pimms distributed (still no rain, but surely clouds are looking darker); field coming through, more Pimms, enjoying one myself now and shading eyes from the sun; everyone through, finished off the Pimms and cleared up; back to the clubhouse where the putting competition was under way, £70 raised for the Captain's charity; and then IT RAINED!; only two teams left on the course on holes 17 and 18, one of which was the winning team of Sylvia Peach, Helen Vidal Allen and Ai Lin Liu; tea and prize giving over it was finally time to go home and reflect on a memorable day.

Thanks to all who supported and helped to make it run smoothly.

Jean

Seniors section

The Triangular with South and Royal was finally clinched by one point in the third leg at Hockley by South Winchester.

SW 853 - Hockley 852 - RW 838

Hockley stars were Henry Cooper, Gordon Dewis and John Taylor each with 39 points. If only the Seniors Captain hadn't short putted on two holes. Club President Bob Stilwell welcomed our guests and presented the magnificent trophy to SW Captain Jeff Green.

RW Captain Barry Girdlestone with Halo and Geoff feeling a little put out are also pictured.

Knighton Heath Plate

Organiser John Taylor reported a dry, but windy round at Came Down on 15 June. The team did extremely well to secure a draw, meaning we go through as we were the away team.

Our next opponents will be Meon Valley (again) or Knighton Heath.

Match due to be played by 5 August.

Summer Friendly at Bramshaw (Forest course)

Heavy showers, distant thunder, cows and ponies failed to unnerve 24 stalwarts with Bramshaw showing their mettle on a home course. The foresters turned round a 4:2 defeat at Hockley into a 5:1 home win.

Both teams safely indoors; the heavens opened with a startling flash and an almighty thunderclap. A great day out.
