Greetings golfers,

A great weekend of sport with several British winners in the tennis and now The Open has finally arrived, will a British winner take the Claret Jug? Good Luck to amateur Scott Gregory from Corhampton GC already up there practising, pictured with fellow Cobra player Rickie Fowler. I am heading to Scottish links at the weekend to try and qualify for the Seniors Open again, this year being held at Carnoustie. I will be pre-qualifying on Monday at Montrose golf club along with fellow Hampshire Pro Michael Lord.

Course news

Regrettable Ragwort

We are now approaching the time of year when Ragwort is becoming prevalent - this is an invasive weed that can take over our long grasses and must be pulled out by hand to control its population. Usually in July the amount of grass mowing we need to do is reduced due to dry weather - this year however isn't a normal year.

If anyone is available to help pull Ragwort on Monday 18th July please sign up on the notice board, your help will be much appreciated.

Tip of the week

Does Your Glove Look Like This

If you keep wearing out the leather in the heel pad of your golf glove, you're a prime candidate for wrist, elbow and shoulder injuries. What happens is that you hold the club deep in the palm of the hand, and it rubs against the heel pad, eventually causing it to tear.

Holding the club deep in the palm instead of in the fingers restricts the wrists' ability to hinge and unhinge during the swing. The hands and arms are put under more stress, which can lead to issues like tendon and ligament tears or inflammation. Less common, but still a possibility, are ailments such as fractures of the wrist bones. Stronger forearm muscles, upper arm muscles and shoulder muscles, will help protect your hands and arms from injuries when you swing a club. Click here to see the incorrect vs. correct way of holding the club.

Junior news

Juniors - a date for your diary, Tuesday 30th August The Junior Championship a 36 hole medal event open to all juniors. Entry will be open on the psi at the beginning of August.

Seniors section

QUACKERS! - We must have been ... as Hockley Seniors battled their way round Alresford in a "Summer" Friendly match v Alresford Vets. Hopes of a dry opening appearing in rain filled skies were dashed on 29 June as their Captain Geoff Jenkins ( a Welshman who seemed to like rain! ) led his team to a 3.5 to 2.5 victory. Well drained, fast and true greens did Alresford credit! Appropriately, we were served a delicious DUCK breast meal after the match!

SUNSHINE re-invigorated our Hockley men who achieved a 4-2 victory against Hayling Vets on 5 July. Well done fellas!

WANTED
! - Think not what your Club can do for you; rather what you can do for your Club! Dr. Peter Betts has been the Organiser for the Hockley Seniors Team of the Knighton Heath Knockout Trophy for several years now and would like someone to take over. PLEASE contact Peter for details of this not too onerous but essential role.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED - to help out at our SENIORS OPEN on Wednesday 7 September. PLEASE contact Seniors' Captain, Geoff Charnley if you can lend a hand; e.g. starters, entering scores.

Ladies news

Ladies Medal

The Ladies medal played on Thursday was won by Sue Poulter with a nett 72.

Team Apparel

A list has been posted on the ladies notice board for the team shirts, jumpers and slipovers, should any new Ladies be playing in matches and require the team outfit. The order will be placed at the end of July.

Competition news

On a dry Saturday we had a good entry into the Men's Stableford and the results were:

Division 1 -
Winner - Matt Chalke with 38 points.
Runner Up - Adrian Bell with 37 points.

Division 2
Winner - David Morgan with 33 points
Runner Up - Mike Brown with 31 points.

No 2's sweep this week as Jack was rather inundated with BRS tee bookings on Saturday due to a slight technical issue! All sorted now, but we apologise if you were not able to get through on the phone.

Men's Invitation

23 pairs, playing 18 holes better ball in the morning and 10 holes Greensomes in the afternoon, contested the Men's Invitation on Sunday. Light rain and a strong breeze didn't seem to affect the early starters with Past Captain Robin Webb and his partner Paul Turner returning a magnificent 42 points to be leading by 2 points at the halfway stage.

As the breeze strengthened in the afternoon Robin and Paul were unable to maintain their lead and were overhauled by 4 pairs.

Finishing in 3rd place with a total of 60 points (39 & 21) were Centenary Captain Steve Moore and his partner Mark Davies. Runners up with 61 points (40 & 21) were Captain Adie Nicol and his partner Ian Hibberd who were pipped at the post by Alan Carpenter and his partner Andrew Rushton, who also scored 61 points (40 & 21) winning on countback.

Many thanks go to Paul Brown for spending the day doing the morning and afternoon starting and processing the scores.
