At last the sun has come out, and after one of the most captivating final rounds in modern golfing history, Henrik Stenson made the hardest of all sporting achievements look easy by winning The Open by 3 shots on 20 under par, amazing golf! Of course, it takes two to tango, and if Stenson's ball striking was commanding, his arch-rival on the day, Phil Mickelson had the short game touch of an artist. Stenson was different class! Tiger was great and changed the game, but that was the best last round EVER.

It was a performance that will be talked about for many, many years and great for European golf and the Ryder Cup.

Competition news

Can we please ask that you ALL put your scores into the psi after play GOOD OR BAD, this week Jack had to search for over 10 missing scorecards and this takes some time when you have 132 cards to search through.

On a dry Saturday we had an excellent entry into the President's Cup.

The overall winner with 40 points was David Morgan
Runner Up with 39 points was Neil Absalom
Best Lady was Ai Lin Liu with 38 points.

Pros news

Thank you to all those members that sent me Good Luck wishes for the Seniors Open pre-qualifying event. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be and I missed out this year.

Demo day

A busy Titleist demo day was held last week, and as you can see there was plenty to choose from.

The range was in constant use and I hope those that attended benefitted from trying the Titleist range.

Our next demo day is on Thursday, 4 August from 2 - 6pm, when you will be able to try and be fitted for any PING product.

Give us a call in the pro shop, or click here to get in touch if you would like to request your fitting slot.

In the mean-time, click here to find out more about what PING has to offer.

Tips from the team

Fix: The Number 1 Iron Fault

Do this:

Hit down on your iron shots. Assuming you get into a good backswing position, with your weight on the instep of your back foot, your first move down should be a forward bump of the hips that transfers your weight toward the target. Then stay in your posture and turn through the shot, feel like you're turning down and through and keep some flex in your knees at impact, especially your back knee. That helps create a downward strike.

Not this:

Don't try to help the ball into the air. If you do, you'll straighten your legs and pull up in an attempt to lift it off the ground. That pulls the club head up, too, and causes thin shots, even tops. Ironically, the more you try to get the ball up, the lower it flies. As you turn through the shot, maintain the same knee flex and spine tilt you set at address. You'll have a better chance of hitting the ball flush so the loft on the club can do its job.

If you are struggling with any aspect of your game, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Seniors section

At long last summer arrived, sun shining on ponds adorned with water lilies, but alas local course knowledge prevailed for Waterlooville in a 2.5 to 3.5 defeat. We enjoyed a cracking meal after the match though with strawberries and cream for pud!

Good luck Hockley in our next round of the Knighton Heath Plate v Meon Valley on 28th July.

Diary Date: Hockley Seniors Open, 7 September - why not bring along a pal from another club. Application forms on Hockley website. Superb day out; great prizes.

Our Seniors captain forgot to mention he went Gliding last month. HIGH FLYER .... and completely sober.

Stenson win

The 145th Open Championship saw Callaway’s Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson go head-to-head in a Sunday showdown that will go down as one of the greatest ever – it really was some display of ball striking. We’re used to seeing the Swede use that much-loved 3-wood of his, but we also saw him use his XR driver to devastating effect at Royal Troon.
