Hello golfers,
European golf moves closer to home this week with The British Masters at The Grove in Hertfordshire. Jack has been selected to caddy on the Pro Am day, not for a celebrity, but for one of the sponsors, he will however be in the group with professional Ross Fisher. We hope he is able to take some pictures for us to show you next week.

Rules Preferred Lies (Winter Rules) is now in operation. This means you can mark your ball on the fairway, clean it and replace it within 6 inches of where you marked it.
Although the rule I spoke about last week was regarding 'Putting', the rule actual applies to any part of the game.
Your playing partners are NOT permitted to stand behind you.
Congratulations go to David Cooney on his first ever 'Hole in One', this was achieved at Hockley on the 15th a par 4 so an amazing feat, and yes using his driver. He thought it had gone into the valley before the green, but was astounded to find it in the hole.
Well Done David.
How do you fancy your very own parking space for a year?
Well for only a £1 it's well worth a go, all you need to do is guess the combined drives of all 4 incoming captains, Nick Goater, Wendy Evans, Tony Crawford and Laurie Tennant.
The entry sheet is on the bar and the draw will take place after the 'Drive In'.
All proceeds are going to the new captain's charity, Naomi House and Jack's Place, local to Winchester and a very worthy cause.
Good Luck
We seem to be having some glorious weather during the day at the moment, but boy isn't chilly in the mornings?
You may think Jack is dressed ready for the Artic, but very soon you will need all these layers. This week we took delivery of the FootJoy 'Chill out' in Red and Navy, this is the perfect garment to keep you warm on or off the course. It features a four way stretch fabric which allows a complete range of motion when playing and is very easy to wash.
To keep your head warm, the Titleist 'POM POM Beanie' along with the Titleist 'Snood'.
For those of you that carry your golf bag, we have the Titleist 'Hand warmer', which attaches around your waist and features a double sided fabric to keep away moisture and circulate heat for continued comfort around the course. The cuffed ends help trap in heat and block out cold making this the ideal for cold winter temperatures.
Pop in a Handwarmer for extra warmth, perfect!
Drop into the pro shop and have a chat with a member of the team to see how we can help keep you warm and dry this winter.
Book Sale
I am selling a few sports Autobiographies in the shop and all proceeds will go to the current Captain's charity the Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance. Your donations can help them reach their final target of £8,000.
As another golfing year for the Club's Seniors draws to a close with our Annual Meeting on Friday, 14 October at 11am, I would like to thank all staff, the Pro shop team, Jean White and the Ladies, my very able right hand guy and Seniors' Vice-Captain, Dr. Tony Crawford and most of all YOU for your wonderful support during my year in office.
We won our last official Summer Friendly against Barton-on-Sea Vets 4:2 on 5th October. Combining our home and away scores against the 15 clubs we played during the season, Hockley won 8 and lost 7. Emphasis was strongly on socially rewarding days with good golf, camaraderie and great food; all of which we achieved.
Thanks also to John Taylor and Peter Betts for organising the more competitive Wessex Seniors Winter League and the Knighton Heath Knockout Trophy competitions.
My last match was with our other past Seniors' Captains, kindly organised by Peter Betts on 6th October. Stuart Hopkins joined us, all the way from Sherborne with 13 seniors participating in teams of 3 (without Albert) for some top quality golf balls. The match and yet another delightful meal prepared by our top catering team, rounded off a most enjoyable year for me.
Thanks everyone
Geoff Charnley Seniors' Captain
The Roger Gaines trophy hasn't been played for the past 3 years and we would love to reinstate it this year. Roger was a very proactive junior organiser when Jack was a junior, the trophy was generated and is played in his memory.
The format is a pairs, greensomes, stableford and we aim to pair one of our more experienced juniors with a newer junior. The entry fee is only £4, sign up on the junior notice board and the psi.
Juniors please give this your support.
On a beautiful day at Basingstoke we unfortunately lost the Ladies friendly match 1½ to 2 ½ .
Thursday, 13 October is the Ladies AGM at 7pm in the clubhouse.

Annual Men v Ladies match
Last Sunday Jean and I captained our respective teams in the last official home match of our terms. In near perfect conditions we battled it out with neither side gaining a clear advantage. With the first 4 games ending in 2 wins for the men and 2 wins for the ladies, it was fitting that the last game ended all square and the overall match result was an honorable draw meaning that Jean and myself ended our year as winners.
On behalf of Jean and myself, I would personally like to thank Jo Russell, Polly Church, Susie Liley, Margaret Williams, Sylvia Peach, Karen-Marie Dinesen, Helen Vidal-Allen, Ann Gleadow, Monica Finlayson, Robin Webb, Andy Evans, Graham Light, Keith Eames, Nigel Liley, Howard Gleadow, David Longbottom, Mike Eames and Peter White for taking part in the event and also thank Steve and the catering team for providing a superb meal after play.
Pictured are Jean and I with the trophy.

The Winter League information has now been posted and entries can be made on the psi in both changing rooms.
Hockley Winter Foursomes
The popular Hockley Winter Foursomes is now open for entry. We are very lucky at Hockley in being a free draining course resulting in us not having a single course closure last winter despite it being one of the worst for many years. So in entering the Hockley Winter Foursomes we offer you the opportunity for some excellent winter competitive golf. This is an 'Open' event so please tell your friends.
Full details are on the club website or in the foyer. |
