Hello golfers,
I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the weekly newsletter, bringing you up to date with all the latest news and gossip from Hockley Golf Club.
Are you prepared?
The fog caused some disruption to your golf this weekend, but I have just heard we can now expect some 'Artic' conditions later this week. Don't get caught out, we have everything to keep you warm out on the course from handwarmers, base layers, lined jumpers, woolly hats, snoods, mitts and for those of you that carry, the Titleist hand warmer which can be worn around the waist as modelled by Jack.
Motocaddy even make fur lined winter mitts to keep on your trolley, a brilliant invention and no gloves left out on the course.

Tip of the Week - Breaking 100
It's time to jump that last hurdle and achieve the goal you've had your eye on for maybe a little too long. This summer, you're going to break your personal scoring barrier, whether it's 100, 90 or 80?
Keep your centre - High handicappers hit it fat and thin because they sway during the swing. Practice hitting balls with your feet together, that will force you to stay centred. If you control your centre, you control the bottom of the swing and that's solid contact.
Get a high launch - I would bet you're coming into the ball steeply with your driver, which probably means you set up over your front foot. You want to play the ball off your front shoulder, but tilt your spine back, you'll hit up on the ball for a powerful launch.
If you're are still struggling and would like to book a lesson with one of our team, please click here to get in touch.
Pat's New Year Challenge
Many of you may well know our long-standing member, Pat Lawson. In support of this year's Captain's Charity, Naomi House and Jack's Place, Pat has decided to take on a personal challenge to help raise money.
His challenge is to lose two stone in weight by Friday, 31 March. Located in the foyer of the clubhouse will be the donation sheet, if any of you would like to make a donation, please sign-up on this sheet and then pass your donations behind the bar. I'll keep you updated on his progression.
On behalf of Pat and the Captains we would appreciate your kind donations and we wish Pat all the best with his personal quest. On a final note, if you see Pat around the club, he will be trained but please do not feed!
Nick Goater, Club Captain.
Captain/Pro Challenge
A busy couple of days for Nick and I, but we managed to keep our good run going. On Friday, we played Howard Gleadow and Dave Thompson with Gordon Dewis and Phil Mackie, both games stayed tight, but we came through beating Howard and Dave 3&1 and Gordon and Phil 3&2.
Saturday's games were against Tony Cullen and Eddie Francis with Drew Gibson and Grant Russell. We beat drew and Russell 4&2, whereas, Tony and Eddie took us down the 19th. Tony had made some lovely putts coming in, perhaps the best holing from 8ft for par on 18 making Nick having to hole from 5ft to keep the match alive which he did nicely. As is now tradition, it was nearest in three on the 1st, our first extra hole this series, we managed to scrape through.
So, on to next week and some younger challengers in the shape of Ian Harvey and Mike Black with Daryl Williams and Matt Richards. Can the run continue?
The Numpties Annual Dinner
It has been confirmed that Danny Munro is the top numpty for 2016 and if he wins it next year he will keep the trophy forever. Please remember to 'Bow' when you next great Danny!
The winners of the food and drink quiz, the favourites led by Steve Moore (Wine Committee) were heavily defeated. Could this be the time for Donald Trump to take over the Wine Committee?
John Simpson Third Card
A very small entry into the John Simpson Third Card this weekend due to the foggy weather. The full results of the three days' play can be found on the website, but the overall winner with an amazing 45 points on Saturday was Scott Hammond.
Several of you still have Winter Leagues matches to play, can we remind you that first round matches must be completed by Tuesday, 31 January.
Wessex Winter League - Still Unbeaten...
A very close match on Wednesday against Alresford at Hockley ending in a draw. Match one was won on 18th, match two was lost and matches three and four were halved, helped by an eagle from David Davies! Corhampton are in the lead with us in second. The full league table is as follows:
Corhampton - 13 (played 4).
Hockley - 11 (played 4).
South Winchester - 6 (played 5).
Royal Winchester - 4 (played 4).
Alresford - 2 (played 5).
Next matches are RWGC away on Thursday, 12 January and Corthampton at home on Wednesday, 25 January. I will send out the team sheet for that one next week.
