Hello golfers,
After a very wet week, there is at last some warmth forecast which will hopefully bring more of you out to play this Bank Holiday Weekend. I hope you all enjoy another edition of our weekly newsletter bringing you up to date with all the latest news and offers from Hockley Golf Club.
Charity Event
A Charity Race Night is being held on Friday, 2 June starting at 7:00pm, £10 per person (to be collected on the night) includes your race night ticket and food. Please put the date in your diary and support this event. A fun night out and friends and family are welcome.
Charity Cycle Ride
Thank you to those that have already donated and I will only ask once more and then remind you nearer the date. On Friday, 1 September - Sunday, 3 September our eldest son Ben along with several friends are doing a charity bike ride from London to Amsterdam in aid of Naomi House and Jack's Place, your support is very much appreciated and you can help them raise money for this great cause by donating directly to their fundraising page (Click here to visit).
Just Giving sends your donation straight to Naomi House Children's Hospice (Wessex Children's Hospice Trust) and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK Taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more. Thank you for your support! A final thank you for all the Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers that were handed in. Tracy and I took them out to Naomi House last week, they were very grateful and will let us know what they have purchased very soon.
Learn The Power Lag
Maintain the angle... Coming down, hook a finger around the shaft to feel your wrist hinge. One of the keys to hitting solid, powerful shots is to keep the clubhead lagging behind your hands as you swing down to the ball. The longer you preserve this lag, the more speed you can generate and the farther the ball will go when you do finally release the club through impact.
How do you create lag and maintain it? Think of your left arm as one lever and the shaft as another, going back, hinge your left wrist to create a sharp angle between the two levers. Then, as you swing down, maintain that angle for as long as you can, when you release it, the clubhead will speed up.
Many amateurs release the lag too soon by unhinging their wrists. A drill to prevent this is to swing back with your left arm only and as you start down, hook a finger from your right hand around the shaft and resist the unhinging of your wrist. Groove this feel. In a normal swing, your wrists unhinge naturally at the bottom of the arc.
If you are still struggling with this techinique and would like to book a lesson with one of the team, please click here to get in touch.
On The Course...
A low entry into the Ladies Stableford on Sunday so this was processed as one division. The winner with 38 points was new member Alex Brown.
Ladies please note the sign-up sheet and information has now been posted in the locker room for Lady Captain's Day on Thursday, 15 June. The Ladies Championship and Fuchsia Bowl are now open for entry on the PSI in the pro shop or locker room. Please enter as usual by selecting your surname and then choose 'Future Competitions'.
Knockouts
Can you all please ensure you record the results on the draw sheets AND on the PSI. By recording the result on the PSI members can see the results by logging into the member's area of the website.
Dehli Cup
The day was testing with winds, heavy rain at times and the occasional burst of sun which lead to a varied and successful day. Control of the course was smooth and well communicated with the help of the Hampshire Golf Union Referees led by Mr Tony Child. Play went without any major incidents due to the help of our Hockley volunteers sparing their time assisting with registration, starting, ball spotting and flag waving. Thank you. With their help, Hockley gave a professionally run flagship event the club are proud of hosting.
Stephen, Ryan and their teams catered and kept the players watered with excellent feedback. Thank you to Alan Drayton, Derek Noyce, Adrian Nicol and Paul Brown for processing all the cards and eventual prize winners. Thank you to our Professional Team for preparing the draw and co-ordinating the players on their practice rounds. The course was prepared in magnificent condition fit for any Club/County/National Major Golfing Event after a heavy deluge of rain during the evening before the Delhi Cup. This was referred to in the winning speeches, "the best greens we have played on this year with excellent definition and presentation." Thank you to Glenn and your team. Indeed, excellent praise for Hockley Golf Club.
After the morning round, there was a three-way tie with gross scores of 67 from George Nicolson-Jack (Romsey), Owen Grimes (Romsey) and Tim Lewis (Royal Winchester). Fourth placed with a gross 71 was Alexander Olney (Hockley). The afternoon round promised to be competitive with the weather conditions continuing to be varied. Owen Grimes (Romsey) eventually held on with a gross 70 -1 and a total of 137 -5 to win the 2017 Delhi Cup. Full results were as follows:
Gross Winner - Owen Grimes 137 for -5 (Romsey). Runner Up - Nathanial Riddett 140 for -2 (Shanklin and Sandown). Nett Winner - George Nicholson-Jack 135 for -7 (Romsey). Runner Up - Travers Murgatroyd 138 for -4 (Blackmoor).
