I thought summer had arrived last week, but of course it was short lived with rain and storms at the weekend and a mixed forecast again for half term week.

I hope you all enjoy another edition of our weekly newsletter bringing you up-to-date with all the latest news and offers from Hockley Golf Club.

Members news

Hole-In-One Alert

Hole In OneHockley played in the Brockenhurst Stag against the Army GC at North Hants GC at the weekend and unfortunately lost 6.5 to 5.5. However, Gary Whitfield enjoyed his day because he got his first ever 'Hole-in-One'.

This picture was taken of Gary retrieving his ball from the hole on the 15th at North Hants. I am informed by his playing partner that he didn't even watch the ball go in as he thought he had hit an awful shot that was heading for the bushes!

Bonus Ball

After several weeks of non-winners, I'm pleased to say the worthy winner of the bonus ball sweep was Jenni, our barmaid. Jenni works very hard each week encouraging you all to enter the sweep.

Macmillan Cancer Golf DayCharity Golf Challenge

On Monday June 26th, 4 of our members will be playing 72 holes in one day for Macmillan Cancer support. If you are playing on this day and happen to come across them can we politely ask that you please let them play through.

Donation information will be available soon.

Pro Am

Day Of Records

Perfect weather for the Pro Am last week, which proved to be the best ever during our time at the club. We had 35 teams some made up of members teams, but mostly Pro's brought their own teams.

Pro Am TeamSome very notable records were set as 21 pro's equalled par or better (the most ever); all teams broke par the first time ever too; and the winning team score was 26 under with 4 other teams on 21 under, one of which was my team of Captain Nick Goater, Vice-Captain Damien Cain and immediate past Captain Adrian Nicol, pictured here.

Many thanks to you guys for a great day and on that note, can I start to thank all the people who made this day so good.

Ladies VolunteersThe 6 ladies who were on the 11th serving the refreshments, Pam Chrismas, Kay Free, Wendy Frances, Rae Peacock, Sally Haigh and Sally Carter. Steve, Seb, Ryan, Jenni, Jack and all the bar staff who worked a very long day keeping all the players well fed and watered.

But most of all to Tracy who really drove the whole event from getting sponsors, teams to play and organising the day.

Thanks to our sponsors as well, Gracelands Contractors, Test Valley Windows, KD Commercial Ltd, Winchester Motor Company and Bag Solo. These events are not possible without their support. Finally, to Jack and Chris for taking all the phone calls and booking teams in for us.

The winning professional score was 66, 5 under by Matt Miles. With scoring this good it shows what a great condition the course was in. So a great big thank you to Glenn and his team for their continuing hard work to make our course as good as it can be. Glenn along with 2 of his team Ryan and Graham played in the event and finished in the prizes as well, so congrats on all fronts.

Seniors section

Octogenarians' Trophy

Seniors of a certain age are reminded that the Octogenarians' Trophy will be contested on Monday June 5th at 1 pm. This is a non-qualifying competition and entry will be on the PSI in the Pro Shop. If you will be 80 years old on that date, please come along and join in.

Senior Captain's Report

Last week we played two away matches which were both competitive and fun. But unfortunately we lost them both! We were soundly beaten at Brokenhurst 5-1 but all the matches were close with thanks to Gordon Dewis and David Greenhalgh for securing our only point. The course was in superb condition and despite the loss we had a great day's golf. We must make sure we win when our home match later in the year!

Our next match was at Rowlands Castle on a very hot day, losing a close match 4-2. Graham Light and Brian Leadbitter winning their match 3 and 2 as well as our usual winners David Greenhalgh with John Baddams, securing a 1 up result.

Our match at home v Basingstoke on 17th May was cancelled due to very wet weather, but has been rearranged for Tuesday 11th July at 1pm.

We have a few of our regular players unavailable through injury or illness, so I need more seniors to sign up for these matches please. They are fun with friendly competition and played on some great local courses.

If you are unsure or would like more details please contact me on 01962-862168 or email adc@doctors.org.uk.

Sunday's stableford saw another Gillespie take the top spot as Richard was the Division One winner with 41 points while David Gillespie was runner up with 39 points. Division Two winner was Clive Keywood with 35 points, beating John Harris on a countback. Great golf guys!

Satterthwaite Salvers

Salver Winners23 pairs took part in the annual Satterthwaite Salvers on Bank Holiday Monday; a record entry for this competition.

The Captain presented the prizes to the winners and defending champions Wendy and Andy Evans who scored 41 points. Runners up were new pairing of Derek Noyce and June Glasspell with 38 points.

It was great to see so many members in the clubhouse afterwards on what would have been a very quiet Bank holiday Monday.
