Hello golfers,
What a scorching weekend, we've never had so many members in the shop at any one time, could it be the air conditioning that has recently been installed perhaps?
Can I remind you to take plenty of fluids out with you, drinking water helps lower your body temperature and replaces the fluid you lose through sweating. It should be drunk before you get to the stage of feeling thirsty and sipped at regular intervals, not gulped. If you feel thirsty then it's too late you are already de-hydrated. Make the most of the weather and enjoy your golf.
Captain's Day
There's only a few spaces left now for the Captain's Day Stableford. Myself and my family look forward to seeing you on the 11th tee with refreshments we are sure you will enjoy. To add to the day, member David Hughes has kindly offered to sell, under a sealed bid, golfing memorabilia in the form of signed golf flags, autographed by winning golfers from The Masters, Opens and the Ryder Cup. Pictured is a sample. These will be available to view on the day where you can also make your bid.
In addition, you will have seen that we have managed to secure some fantastic prizes for a hole-in-one! Due to the value of the first prize, we need to adjudicate the 16th hole. Therefore, if you are not playing and are able to spare a little time on the day, please let myself or the pro shop team know. I will make sure you are well looked after and your help would be much appreciated. There is also still time to sign-up for the evening function, check out the noticeboard for further details. It would be great to see you there.
2017 Alresford Triumvirate
On Thursday, 8 June Hockey Golf Club assembled a well drilled team to take on other teams from around the area to compete for the 2017 Alresford Triumvirate. Our four man team consisted of both experience with Adie Nicol and yours truly having played in this event last year, and the youthful enthusiasm of Nigel Newman and our Vice Captain Damian Cain. With the format being a three way matchplay, confidence was high within the team and surely the trophy would be returning to the Hockley cabinet?
Congratulations to Alton Golf Club who won with a total of 19 points. Team Hockley amassed a total of 13 points and topped the table on page two! However, we were not to go home empty handed. Our Vice Captain, Damian Cain stepped up to the plate and took the nearest the pin in two prize at the short par four, 14th. Our thanks to Alresford Golf Club for their hospitality during the day and of course my thanks to Adie, Nigel and Damian for playing and providing a great team spirit.
Men's Triangular Match
On Sunday, 18 June, Hockley entertained Brokenhurst Golf Club and North Hants in a three way matchplay friendly. Sounds straight forward enough? Well, the resulting scorecards had the similarities to a Sudoku puzzle! That written and in the blazing sun, all of the matches were played in a great spirit. Winners on the day was Brokenhurst with a total of 20 points, Hockley were second with 15 points pipping North Hants who ended with 13.
The day ended with drinks and a two-course meal. Thanks to all of the Hockley team for playing and for the catering and front of house team for ensuring we didn't shrivel and dry up. A big thank you also to Danny Francis for organising this fixture.
Nick Goater,
Club Captain.
Congratulations
I am sure you will join me in wishing Ollie James and his 'wife' Lucy all the very best for the future. Jack and Megan along with several members attended the wedding on Saturday at Oakley Hall in Basingstoke which I am told is a glorious setting for a wedding should anyone be looking for a venue?

On the Course...
We played the home tie of our triangular tournament last week and did very well with 351 points from Royal Winchester with 298. However we had a lot to make up from the two earlier rounds and the cup was won by Royal Winchester with Hockley second and South Winchester third. The cup was presented to the Royal Winchester Captain Terry Wilson by Peter Betts (Pictured).
A few days later we were entertained by Bramshaw Golf Club and had a very enjoyable friendly match, but we were narrowly beaten 4-2 which was a reverse of the home fixture a few weeks ago.
Don't forget the Seniors' Open takes place on Wednesday, 6 September and last year we had several Hockley members take part. Entry forms can be found on the website or in the clubhouse lobby.
Tony Crawford,
Seniors' Captain.
Lady Captain's Day
I just wanted to say a big thank you to everybody who joined me on celebrating my Ladies Captain's Day. 54 players took part on a glorious sunny day although a little blustery on the course, but I think everyone enjoyed their game and afternoon tea. Thank you for your cards and very kind words, they meant a lot to me and I will cherish them forever. Thanks to my starters on the day; Danny Munro and Howard Gleadow, fantastic job fellas.
Congratulations to June Glasspell who won the Lady Captain's Day Cup and winners of the team prize went to Victoria Cumberledge, Jo Russell and Lorraine Cole. My next big event will be Ladies Invitation Day on Thursday, 13 July. The sign-up sheet is now on the noticeboard and I do hope you will come along and support this day as you have done in the past, why not invite a friend, relative or business colleague to a day out on our fantastic course? £38 per pair which includes coffee on arrival a buffet lunch and prizes.
Stoneham Cup News
We are doing very well so far, winning four games out of five. Our next match is away at Blacknest on Friday, 23 June and I wish the team the best of luck and hopefully another win for Hockley.
Wendy Evans,
Ladies Captain.
Ladies County Match Week
All at Hockley send their very best wishes to County Captain Kay Walshe as she prepares to take her 1st team to Kent to start their campaign in County Match Week (CMW).
