Our first double win!
Week 3 and a slightly better result for Damian and me. Our opponents John Platt and Mike Killingley were receiving 16 shots along with John Walton and Rob Stevens receiving 14 shots, meaning these 2 games were never going to be easy. Although we were 5 up after 5 on John and Mike, we felt in a good position! However, with 4 holes to go we were only 1up and not feeling so good, but, with the closing holes playing into the wind slightly, it helped us to close out the match on the 18th for a 2&1 victory. As I said it was a slightly better week, so here's the not so good bit for all of us at Hockley! We lost to John Walton and his partner Rob. To be fair they did play very nicely and receiving 14 shots meant it was always going to be difficult.
I think this match was a great example of one of the bonuses of the Capt/Pro matches, as it was the first time Damian and I had played with Rob (hopefully not the last) which otherwise we may not have had that opportunity. As I'm sure those of you that know John, will all know shot for shot how they did it, along with how under John’s guidance they beat us 3 & 2.
On to Saturday’s game which was at last played in dry weather was against some old foes in Steve Pullen and John Brickwood and a new pair in Colin Field & Kevin Burnett-Whalley. Both games stayed pretty close all the way round, with the occasional good shot creeping into the game. Some good chipping from Colin and a fantastic 3 wood from Kevin on 16 meant we went down 18 all square with Colin and Kevin and 2up on Steve and John. After each group took 6 on 18 we beat Steve and John 2&1, but still level with Colin and Kevin. Colin and Damian both missed the green and after Kevin missed his putt from 20ft Damian knocked his putt to gimme distance and we had our first double win!
Next weekend we face some of Damian's group, Daryl Williams and Dave Sparks along with Graham Taylor and Mathew Richards, games which Damian will want to win I'm sure.
