Another busy week at Hockley, it’s surprising what a difference a few lighter evenings make, I hope you enjoy another edition of our weekly newsletter bringing you up to date with all the latest news and offers. |
A fond farewell... I am sorry to start with this news, but our good friend and long standing Hockley member Doug Peacock passed away on Monday morning, our thoughts are with Rae and the family. Doug was the first Captain I did Captain/Pro matches with, back in 2003, he was a true gentleman and did so much for Hockley and was very supportive of my boys Ben and Jack. If you ever needed to know about a competition, a trophy or Hockley history Doug was the man to go and he always knew the answer. Doug you will be sadly missed, and it was an honour to have known you.

Congratulations... On a happier note, we are pleased to announce that Jenni our Bar Manager and Steve (ex Chef) are expecting a baby in September. As you all know Glenn our course manager is leaving us in May, a collection and card are now on the bar for you all to sign and give generously.

Where am I? Thank you to all those that took the time to reply, but I am sorry not one correct answer. All but one person said I was in the dip on the 15th, I was in fact in the dip on the 17th just short of the trees in the middle of the fairway.

This interesting picture was sent in by Indie Bilkhoo of Howard Gleadow’s ball last Tuesday, bet he had a little trouble ‘putting’ with that on the 18th?

Captain/Pro Challenge We are back! Unfortunately, after losing five of our last six matches we did win our two games this weekend, but they were the last in the Damian Cain era. Our opponents were Dave Gregory and Mark Denton with Roy Andrews and Mike Gandy both regular foes of Captain/Pro matches. Mike and Roy got off to a slow start, but Dave and Mark were very strong, and we turned three up on Mike and Roy, but two down to Dave and Mark. The game then started to turn in our favour as we won the next four holes to close out Mike and Roy and be two up on Dave and Mark. After making halves on 14 we won 15 to go three up on these two and halved 16 with pars. Going down 17 Dave hit a fantastic shot into the green to about 8ft and although Damian hit a great shot it just went a little long, we then had a typical matchplay moment, we holed, and Mark missed ending our game with them. Although Damian and I bogeyed 2, 4 and 8 we parred every other hole so in our last match we did go out in style! I would like to add on a personal note how Damian and I have really enjoyed this series of matches and look forward to playing the finalists this weekend. For the record we played 40 games and only lost 11, so after a bad start and a poor finish our record was pretty good.

Masters Draw The Masters is only a week away and our Masters Draw is nearly full. Only £5 per ticket for your chance to win the first prize of over a £100 to spend in the pro shop, this would certainly knock a dent in the new driver or trolley you may be considering purchasing. We will also be running daily prizes of £10 each for the best and worst scores and the main prizes will go to fifth place.

I am sure you will join me in wishing Harry Ellis all the very best in The Masters next week, such an achievement from the Hampshire lad. Harry’s dad Murray is a member at Hockley and is flying out this week to join Harry along with a few other Hockley members. |
This weekend, Harry defeated United States Amateur Champion Doc Redman, 6&5, in the Georgia Cup played at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta. The Georgia Cup annually pits the British Amateur Champion (Ellis) versus the US Amateur Champion in an 18-hole matchplay format. It is always a prelude to the upcoming Masters. |

On the Course... 27 ladies entered the March fun competition. It was a very nice day and Fiona; Kathie and Pat were the winners with Jo, Sally and June the runners-up. Congratulations to Damian for organising a great quiz night and thanks to the catering and bar staff for their service, the meal was great. We hope the weather stays dry for the Hockley Hares on Thursday.

Hockley Quiz Night Last Friday saw the clubhouse buzzing with the excitement of the annual Hockley Quiz Night, with12 teams going to battle in a bid to be crowned “Quizzers of the Year." It was an incredibly close fought contest and going into the final round every team still had a chance of winning. Even after a tricky music round we found ourselves with a three-way tie, it was time for a tie-breaker. The three team captains stepped forward and were asked “What was the official attendance of the 1976 FA Cup Final in which the mighty Saints beat Manchester Utd?” In a twist of fate our own Pompey supporting Golf Pro Gary Stubbington guessed closest and secured victory for his team “Quizlamic Extremists.” A huge thanks to everybody who helped make the night such a success, and for the generosity shown by all those who attended in helping to raise over £700 for our chosen charities. Damian Cain, Club Captain. I must add thanks to the new ‘Ant and Dec’ duo of ‘Cain and Goater’ who did a stunning job on the evening and for all their efforts in getting the quiz together.

Family Foursomes A disappointing low entry this year with only 11 pairs taking part in the annual Family Foursomes event, which was initiated by Doug and Rae Peacock in 2004. On a chilly, but dry Sunday and the lower than normal scores were possibly due to the somewhat "tricky" pin positions on a few of the greens. In third place with 30 points were father and son pair Alan and Charles Carpenter losing out on countback to another father and son pair Mike and Taylor Archer. But leading the way by a clear four points were the husband and wife pair of Ai Lin Liu and David Longbottom. Captain Damian is pictured presenting the trophy to the winning couple. Many thanks go to Mike and Keith Eames for filling in at short notice due to pair pulling out at the last minute. As always thanks to Adrian Nicol for giving up his time to do the starting and scoring of the event, he even got roped in to the staring of the Gales Hockley match immediately after.
