Welcome to another edition of the weekly newsletter bringing you up to date with all the latest news and offers from Hockley Golf Club. It may be spring, but it’s still blooming cold, perhaps I should get the handwarmers and woolly hats out again? |
Congratulations Pictured is a very happy and tired Viv Stevens with her granddaughter Chloe after her success in the London Marathon last week. It's so important for golfers of all abilities - particularly amateurs, who have far more to gain - to get custom fitted, as opposed to leaving it to chance, like you'd be doing if you bought standard spec clubs straight off the shelf. Click here to book a fitting.

Hockley vs. Tidworth Mixed Match (away at Tidworth) The season for the summer friendly mixed matches got off to a great start on a wonderfully sunny and dry day at Tidworth Garrison Golf Club on Sunday, 22 April. For those of us who had not visited Tidworth before the lovely rolling downland course on the edge of Salisbury plain was a delight. We had a full team of 14 players (seven pairs) playing a greensome competition who fully enjoyed the day playing with this highly sociable club. The team was led on the day by the Hockley stalwarts of Tony Cullen and Jean White. The competition was keen in most matches with many finishing on the 18th with Hockley just coming out on top with a 4:3 win. Anyone interested in being a part of one of these great days, please sign-up for the games on the sheet in the clubhouse reception. David Greenhalgh.

Hockley triumph against Le Hockley Last weekend saw the annual visit of our French friends from Etretat, aka Le Hockley. Each year Hockley host a match against Etretat, each year Etretat lose, and each year they invite us back to France! It was the founder of the International Olympic Committee who coined the phrase “It's not the winning it’s the taking part” and in a marvellous ironic twist, that man was a Frenchman, Baron Pierre De Coubertin, oh how I wish I had known that in advance of the Captain’s after-dinner speeches on Saturday!
However, it must be said that what the Etretat team lack in golfing prowess, they more than make up for in friendliness, humour and generosity of spirit. It was my first experience of the match and I must confess that prior to the weekend I had wondered if it may be a stuffy restrained affair, I needn’t have worried. Their Captain; Mr Paul Hopital, could not have been more engaging and complimentary of our club and the welcome they always receive. He also wanted me to pass on the message that EVERY Hockley member is always welcome at Etretat, “If you are a member of Hockley, then you are a member of Etretat” I know that a number of Hockley members regularly make the trip over to France and take advantage of what I am told is a superb course, at a peak time cost of 80 euros to other visitors, it’s a real asset to our members to have it available “gratuit.”
I would like to stress that the match is open to all adult members new and old, there are no handicap restrictions, and as proved by my predecessor, there is no need to speak a word of French. I managed to get through the whole weekend without mentioning mange tout once! The return leg is in September and I would appeal to anybody even half thinking of making the trip to give it a go. If you have any questions please come and talk to either me, or Tony or Carole Cullen. A huge thank you to all Hockley staff for their efforts, the Cullens for their organisation, and to the Hockley team for their support.

For the record, Hockley won the match 9-2. A convincing win considering that Tony Cullen and I somehow managed to give them a 0-1 lead by losing our match! Pictured is the Etretat Captain finding it very difficult to hand over the match trophy… again!
