I am sorry to have to report that
Joe Hinbest will be leaving us this Friday. Joe has decided that Professional golf is no longer the career path he wishes to take. Joe has worked hard with junior coaching and we wish him all the very best for the future.
Jack has had a clear out! Come and make him an offer (sensible) on some of his old putters, wedges, irons, fairway woods and so much more, the boy is a hoarder!
A report from Graham Light on his eventful Candlesticks quarter final last Sunday:
Peter White & I had to play our match against John Fisher and Reza Sotoudeh on Sunday morning before the Hickory Challenge and the deadline of the following day. We teed off at 8.30am in pouring rain, howling gale (the back end of Hurricane Bertha!) with thunder rumbling all around and the occasional flash of lightning. We were all of us soaked to the skin by the 3rd hole!
After 18 holes of battle, the match was all square and, by then the sun was out, the wind had gone and we were able to dispense with rain wear. We had undergone all that dreadful weather to end up no further forward than we were on the 1st tee!!
The first extra hole was halved in nett par and we eventually won on the 2nd extra hole when our 5 (nett 4) beat their 5.
James Braid Medal
There was an outstanding entry into the inaugural James Braid Medal on Saturday with 3 excellent scores of nett 67. The winner on a countback was Martin Rugg, Runner up Paul Mantell and third place went to Howard Barton. The James Braid "Niblick" golf club is currently being mounted on a beech frame with a stainless steel nameplate and will be presented on presentation night in September.
Men vs Ladies Match
The result of the Men v The Ladies match was 2 ½ - 4 ½ to the Ladies. I am informed all but one of the matches went to the 18th hole and was played in very good spirits.
It has been brought to our attention that a medal has been missed from the diary in September. The Men's medal incorporating the Lady Captain''s Trophy will be played on Saturday 6th September. Normal conditions, white tees, play in a 2 or 3 ball only and enter on the day in the Pro Shop.
An extra men's stableford has been added on Saturday 30th August, white tees, qualifier and enter in the pro shop on the day.
The Ladies Centenary Medal on Sunday 24th August has now been cancelled, it has been replaced with a normal Ladies Medal and can be played at any time on Sunday or Thursday 28th August.
Would members please note that competitions cannot be played in 4 balls irrespective of whether or not only one or more players are entered in the competition.
In addition it is a requirement of all competitions that cards are returned and entered on the PSI even if the card is an NR, it creates a problem with the processing of scores if members simply discard a scorecard because it is an NR.
Can we please ask ALL members that are currently holding trophies at home to return them to the office by the end of next week. Presentation evening will soon be upon us and the trophies need to be engraved for the occasion.
A gentle reminder to you all, whilst waiting to play at weekends why not try a buffet breakfast in the bar, all you can eat including orange Juice, tea or coffee for only £6, available from 8am - 12 noon. There is also the option to take coffee or tea out with you and even a bacon or sausage Bap.
Although there was only a small entry into the junior stableford on Friday, the worthy winner was Taylor Archer with 44 points. Taylor a new junior member has certainly got the golfing bug, which is great to see. That tremendous score of course now gives Taylor an official Congu handicap of 27. Well done Taylor.
The winner of the Centenary Seniors Cup last Monday was Kevin McArdle with 38 points.
Seniors this is your last chance to enter the Seniors Open on Tuesday 2nd September. We have had over 60 entries to date so please contact Marc in the office by lunchtime on Friday 22nd August if you wish to play.
