One driver swing thought for longer and straighter drives A lot of golfers have been told to keep the trail elbow close to the body on the backswing, I can't think of a worse driver swing thought. With the trail arm cramped going back, the golfer has a very narrow swing and a restricted body turn and will struggle to create power and consistent strikes.

Forget that, you need the trail arm (right arm for right handed) to be as long as possible for as long as possible. That does a few amazing things, first, it widens the swing arc, which increases the distance the clubhead travels back and, in turn, creates more room for it to accelerate into the ball. A wide arc also pulls the body into a full rotation. Second, with the clubhead moving back straighter, it won't get stuck behind the body. Golfers who get stuck either swing into the ball from too far inside (pushes or hooks) or heave the club away from the body on the downswing (pulls and slices). Third, it creates space between the club and the body, so the trail elbow can drop down at the start of the downswing and set. Make this your one swing thought - Trail arm long for as long as possible. You'll hit longer, straighter drives. Delhi Cup Near perfect conditions for the Delhi Cup this year and a new name on the trophy, Sam Roles from Weymouth Golf Club with a gross score of 137, 5-under-par. This was Sam’s first visit to Hockley and he paid huge compliments to the condition of our course. Well done to Glenn and the rest of the greenkeeping staff. Runner-up was Robbie Flower from Royal Winchester with a gross 139. Winner of the nett competition was Adam Price from Hamptworth with a 137 with Ben Bright from Wellow taking the nett runners-up prize with a 138.

My thanks go to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help on the day. They all deserve a mention. So, thank you to Indie Bilkhoo, June Glasspell, Guy Patterson, Graham Light, Geoff Roberts, Tony and Carole Cullen, Monica Finlayson, Ken Gray, Alan Blatchford, Nigel Newman, Stephen Evans, Steve Pullen, Alan Drayton and last, but not least Chris and Scott from the pro shop. We couldn't have done it without you. Pictured is Captain Damian handing the trophy to Sam. Adie Nicol, Competitions and Handicaps. I must thank Adrian for spending 14 hours at Hockley on Saturday, dealing with the fog delay, entering the scores and in fact running the whole day, he deserves his holiday this week, well done Adrian.

Knockout Competitions A reminder that the 1st ROUND of the THE PINSENT is to be played by SUNDAY, 27 MAY and there will be NO EXTENSIONS. If your match has been played, please ensure the result has been recorded on BOTH the DRAW SHEET and the PSI. If the winners are not posted by the round completion date the game could be assumed not to have been played and therefore both players could be subject to elimination. WINNERS - please check that the win has been posted. On a very busy Sunday, the winner of the Dreadnought Trophy was Matt Chalke with a nett 68, beating Murray Ellis on a countback. Can we please remind you to sign your card and enter your score after play, there were a number of disqualifications for these reasons.

We may be heading into summer soon but it’s still important to have the right clothing on you in case the weather changes. A lightweight mid-layer is the perfect piece to keep in your bag for exactly this reason, and combining it with other layers can create a great look.
