Welcome to another edition of the weekly newsletter bringing you up to date with all the latest news and offers from Hockley Golf Club. Lots to report this week so enjoy the read. |
On the Course... Congratulations to Alan Arthur who had a hole-in-one on the 8th during the stableford on Friday, sadly he didn’t win the competition. There are still a number of courtesies available on Tuesday, 19 June and Wednesday, 20 June whilst we host the Police Championships. Please contact one of the pro team if you wish to be considered for any of them.
|
Here’s a first... as you do! On Sunday a Kent lady was transported to the course for a practice round by her father in his helicopter. The helicopter arrived on the driving range which created lots of interest.

If your match has been played, please ensure the result has been recorded on BOTH the DRAW SHEET and the PSI. If the winners are not posted by the round completion date, the game could be assumed not to have been played and therefore both players could be subject to elimination. WINNERS - Please check that the win has been posted. The Club Championship is now open for entry with more players needed.

Pro-Am Thankfully we were spared the rain last Wednesday for the Pro-Am, we had 30 teams playing, some made up of members teams, but mostly Pro’s bringing their own teams. Thank you to my team of; the past – Nick Goater, the present – Damian Cain and the future – Nigel Newman - Captains for playing. Sadly no team prizes this year for them, but many thanks to you guys for a great day. The event was won by my old friend Guy Shoesmith from West Hill Golf Club in Surrey on 4-under-par, his team also won on 19-under-par. His team consisted of an old football friend Ian Dewhurst, West Hill’s Secretary Patrick Dawson and Hockley member Paul Spooner. There were numerous comments on how good the course was, especially after the amount of rain we had the previous night, so my thanks to new Course Manager Doug Tate and all his staff for their hard work. Thanks to Jenni and the bar team for keeping us fed and well-watered all day and to Monica Finlayson, Rae Peacock, Kay Free, Tracy and Michael for adjudicating on the 16th throughout the day just in case a hole-in-one was scored, the prize was £5,000 cash! Thanks to Mark Mills-Goodlet and Winchester Motor Company for their sponsorship and finally to Tracy who really drove the whole event from getting sponsors, teams to play and organising the day.

On the Course... Several Hockley ladies went to Jersey for County Championship week and enjoyed lovely sunny weather, but quite strong and sometimes cold winds. Kerry Smith from Waterlooville won the Championship. Chris Quinn and her teams had success in the Hezlet and the Alresford Scratch Trophy, but lost out in the Annodota to South Winchester. In the friendlies we lost at Brokenhurst, but won at home against Blackmoor. We lost our Stoneham Cup match at Lee on the Solent 4-3, but won away at Blackmoor 4-3. Well done team. Kay Walshe and I were the only two ladies from Hockley to enter the County Veterans' Championship at Barton-on-Sea. The start was delayed for 30 minutes due to fog, but once we started it wasn't too bad. Although the fog came down again just as my group got to the 18th (which was the 9th on the Needles Course) an island green only 100 yards away and we couldn't see the flag. Very disorientating, however a good day out. The winner of the Ladies Medal held last Saturday was Chris Quinn with a nett 75. Don't forget the Ladies Club Championship and Fuchsia Bowl takes place on Sunday, 10 June; Lady Captain's Day takes place on Thursday, 14 June and we have a Stoneham Cup match at Burley on Tuesday, 12 June. June Glasspell, Ladies Captain. |
Bunch Bowl The Ladies and Seniors met last Thursday for their annual match for the Bunch Bowl. Four pairs from each side took part in the traditional greensome matchplay competition. Despite a weather forecast of heavy showers and lightning, the afternoon turned out to be very warm and occasionally sunny, with just one very short shower. Everyone enjoyed the game which, as usual, was played with a good friendly spirit. The two Captains, June and Geoff, with their partners Gill Quick and Bob Stillwell, set a brisk pace for the rest to follow. There were several ‘special’ moments during that match which saw the pair of ladies beat the pair of men-folk 4&2. The play by the ladies at the thirteenth hole was told to all during the get together after the match. |
|
Three ‘putts’ won them the hole. The first being a very long and extremely low drive by June from the tee. The second being an even lower shot from the fairway by Gill, ending up around six feet almost alongside the flag. The third and final being a magnificent putt by June. They deserved to win. The ladies also won the final game. Luckily for the Seniors' Captain, the two other games resulted in a win for the men, so overall it was a halved match, two all. As the long-standing tradition has it that after a tie, the bowl is retained by the current holders, so June gracefully presented it to Geoff. |
Octogenarian’s Trophy A select group of golfers assembled to contest this prestigious trophy on Monday, the group of five players set off, displaying various levels of golfing ability as they progressed round the course, which was in immaculate condition. The new winner this year is Mike Chilcott with 33 points, beating previous winner Peter Anthony on a countback. Well done gents.

We’re sure the majority of you will agree that having a distance device on the course is a huge benefit, going hand-in-hand with knowing how far you hit each club. For those of you in the market for a laser rangefinder or GPS device, here are a few options within Garmin’s range to suit different preferences. |
Pinpoint laser accuracy There's one standout feature to Garmin's Z80 laser rangefinder that sets it apart from all others on the market. As well as giving precise distances up to 350 yards away, the Z80 also includes hole maps that are integrated into the viewfinder, which display the shape of the hole and provide front and back distances when you lock on to the flag. |
|
Information at a glance If you prefer wearable technology, Garmin has both GPS watches and bands to suit all styles. The Approach S60 watch, seen here on the left, boasts colour hole maps, hazard information and offers front, middle and back yardages. The other, the Approach X40 band, is a slim, lightweight and waterproof wristband that gives you distances to the green and to hazards, as well as heart rate and activity tracking. |
