Welcome to another edition of the weekly newsletter bringing you up to date with all the latest news and offers from Hockley Golf Club.
Well, sadly not a British winner of The Open, but the next best thing, a European. Francesco Molinari became the first Italian to win a major, holding off a pack of star names to claim The Open Championship.
He produced a faultless final round of 69 in windy conditions on the Scottish links to finish eight under, two ahead of four players, including home favourites Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy, tied on six under.
Tiger Woods finished five under after leading midway through the round, with Jordan Spieth on four under. A great day of golf and a very worthy winner.
We hope you're having a great week on and off the golf course and enjoy this week's read! |
Three aces at 16
My apologies I missed a Hole in One announcement a few weeks ago. Congratulations to John Fisher on his first hole in one at Hockley on the 16th using a 5 iron. He also scored a gross 68, nett 61 in the same round. Mike Kelly also had a Hole in One on the 16th, his first in 54 years of playing golf. He similarly used a 5 iron off the bank into the hole.
These were not the only Hole in Ones' on the 16th, John and Mike were just a little too early as Brad Barber aced the hole in Captains Day this weekend and bagged himself £5,000.
He was in the first group out on Saturday, the first shot of the group finished six foot or so from the pin, the 4th shot in the group of Brad’s pitched on the right of the flag and, one bounce forward and then rolled in a lovely arc, hit the flag quite hard and rolled in. Brad hit a 22-degree rescue according to Mike Henry. Brad very kindly bought several bottles of Pimm’s for members to share in his success.

Thankyou
"In my rush to climb to the 16th green I neglected to take water for Fern(the dog), not realising just how hot and humid it was. As a result, Fern was quite uncomfortable. I wish to publicly thank the two members who, in true Hockley fashion, donated their entire remaining water supplies to her. She had never drunk from a bottle before but learned instantly and drank the entire supply. That generosity meant a lot to her and an enormous amount to me. I do not know names but “thank you both so very much”. Trevor Nice and Fern (the dog) |
Good luck Jenni

A word from the Captain
Last Tuesday was Ladies Invitation Day, sadly only 10 pairs played this year, but everyone enjoyed themselves. Great prizes from the Pro Shop chosen by Tracy for first and third places. The lovely bowls for second place we're much admired, they are very tactile. Gill Quick and her partner were the winners with 42 points and my partner and I were second with 41 points.
The friendly match on Monday against Hayling resulted in a win for Hockley, Sadly Stoneham who should also have played had the date wrong. We also played away at Newbury this week and lost 3-1. Thank you to all members who responded to my request for raffle prizes. We made £115 at our Invitation Day for the Club charities.
I would just like to thank Damian for a great day on Saturday. I'm sure everyone enjoyed the drinks and nibbles at the 11th and it was great to see all his family at the evening bash.

Are you the type of golfer who considers the danger ahead of you and plans accordingly, or do you pull a driver from the bag on every par-4 and par-5 without a blink? If you’re the latter then you need to read on. |
Consider the danger You hear pros talk a lot about the ‘smart shot’ in their post-round interviews. If you’re on the tee and there’s a bunker, ditch or other hazard around the distance that your driver or fairway wood normally flies, then make sure you change club to one that takes the trouble out of play, as displayed in this graphic. While you’ll have a slightly longer shot to the green, you’ll greatly reduce the chance of a big number. | |
|
Know your numbers Of course, key to all of this is knowing how far each of your woods carries. If you’re looking to add more distance and control to your game, come and test the Callaway XR Speed driver, XR Speed fairway and Rogue X hybrid. If you have a fitting we can hit all three in a range of different specifications until we find your ideal set-up for the course. |
