Welcome to another edition of the weekly newsletter bringing you up to date with all the latest news and offers from Hockley Golf Club.
The rain finally appeared on Sunday and boy didn’t it come back with a vengeance, only two members braved the weather and that was only because they had a KO match to play.
We hope you're having a great week on and off the golf course and enjoy this week's read! |
Facebook campaign update
Like most golf clubs Hockley needs to continue to recruit new members and to continue to generate revenue via green fees and societies. We wrote to you previously to introduce a Facebook trial we were undertaking to support us with these efforts and we wanted to give you an update.
We have now completed the second full month of this social media campaign and the results to date suggest that we are reaching more people than before the campaign - members as well as the friends of members who have liked and/or shared the posts. We are also increasing the level of engagement with those we have reached which suggests that they are finding the posts interesting. Moving forwards, we will start to add a Facebook code to our posted promotions to help us get a better sense of how this increased reach and engagement is converting into more visitors or enquiries |
In order to continue to reach and engage with more people, we would ask that any members who are following the Facebook page ‘like’ and share as many of the daily posts that they find interesting. We would also ask that members write and share a review of Hockley - the course and/or the Club. This can be done directly on Hockley's Facebook Page the more times a post is liked or shared and the more times we receive good reviews, the more potential guests or members we can reach and attract.

Hard work pays off
Saturday’s Men’s Stableford winner was Danny Francis with 41 points. Danny came to me for a lesson last Thursday because in his own words he said, ‘I just can’t hit it’, after a few pointers I had him back on track and clearly after 41 points hitting it well again. I’m glad the lesson helped Danny. The runner up with 39 points, I am pleased to say was Jack Stubbington, still playing well despite not having played any competitive golf for nearly year.

Knockout competitions
A reminder that the QUARTER FINALS of THE CANDLESTICKS and the SEMI FINALS of THE JUNIOR KNOCK OUT are to be played by SUNDAY, 5 AUGUST and there will be NO EXTENSIONS.
If your match has been played, please ensure the result has been recorded on BOTH the DRAW SHEET and the PSI. If the winners are not posted by the round completion date the game could be assumed not to have been played and therefore both players/teams could be subject to elimination. WINNERS: please check that the win has been posted.

Captain's Day
Saturday, 21 July saw 172 members play in my “Double Bubble Better Ball Stableford”.
It was a challenging format which put the focus firmly on team play, with the eventual winners, Adrian Nicol and Terry Azor coming in with an impressive 112 points. Pictured here Adie doesn’t look so sure?
An unexpected, but very welcome highlight of the day came with Brad Barber achieving a hole-in one at the 16th. Out in the very first group we heard the cheers on the 11th tee which was perhaps unsurprising given the £5000 prize.

|
Of course, Captain’s Day is not only about the golf. As a family, I along with my wife Angie and our girls Jo and Meg had a superb day meeting and greeting members on the 11th tee. |
Apart from greeting duties, Angie was tasked with judging her favourite male and female golf swing. There were various attempts to impress which included; twerking, flossing, Happy Gilmour run-up’s and an X-rated lowering of shorts. Although it must be said that the un-named “flasher” did apply a self-imposed fine and made a VERY generous contribution to the Captain’s Charity. In the end the awards went to Bridget Moore and Nigel Johnson who according to Angie both had a certain “Je ne sais quoi” It was a real pleasure to be able to greet so many of you and blessed with good weather and an endless supply of Pimms the day flew by.
|
On into the evening and we were entertained with live music and a magician, and enjoyed a magnificent BBQ produced by Tom and his team. With over 100 people in the clubhouse it was a great atmosphere and one which it would be lovely to see at Hockley more often.
There are so many people to thank it’s difficult to know where to start. The fivw witnesses who gave up their time to monitor the 16th, the people who donated raffle prizes, the gents from Coffee Lab Winchester, the Pro-Shop team, Greenkeeping team and Bar Staff, the generous donations of members resulting in over £1000 being raised, and to all those that made it a fun day and evening.
Thank you!

Sundays Extra medal was cancelled due to the poor weather, we’ve not had to say that for a while.

Golf jargon can be confusing. Take drivers for example; why is there a 460cc limit set by golf's governing bodies and what does this actually mean? |
Why is driver head size limited? Driver heads are measured in volume and are limited to 460 cubic centimetres (cc). This limit is enforced to stop technology diminishing the skill level needed to play well off the tee. What are the benefits of larger heads? Playing a 460cc driver, like the Titleist 917 D2, gives you the biggest head possible, which means you can miss the middle of the face now and then and still hit a good shot because they tend to be extremely forgiving. What about smaller heads? Smaller heads, like the 440cc Titleist 917 D3, create less drag as they move through the air, so should give you faster swing speeds, which translate to faster ball speeds and more distance, but are a little less forgiving than a larger 460cc headed driver. |
