A fond farewell
We said a fond farewell to Jenni on Sunday as she starts her maternity leave. She was overwhelmed with the presents for both her and the baby.
I would like to thank all those members that contributed to her leaving gifts. We wish her well and look forward to seeing the new arrival next month.

Play it as it lies
This picture was sent in by Martin Gill who was playing with Mark Bowen at the weekend.
Mark was left with rather a ‘tricky shot’ on the 17th, after much deliberation he decided to take a drop.

Celebrating my birthday in style
I would just to thankyou all for my birthday wishes last week. My day was topped off rather nicely by winning the Hampshire PGA Par 3 Championship at Ampfield Golf Club on four under par.
I am pictured with HPGA Captain Steven Hunter who also presented me with a very nice birthday cake from the staff and my fellow pro’s.

The Odyssey Works Red Ball putter
This putter has been designed to dramatically improve the consistency of your setup and alignment. Odyssey have engineered an innovative Red Ball that when lined up through the scope at address means that you are now in the best possible position to make the putt.
Alignment is made incredibly easy by using Versa technology, the contrast between black and white will allow you to consistently feel and see that the face is square.
|
To provide the most accurate and consistent roll off the face Odyssey have used their popular White-Hot RX insert technology. This face balanced mallet has had a lot of weight removed from the body and placed around the perimeter of the putter head. This concentration of weight increases the stability of the face dramatically so that when combined with all the other features almost guarantees that three putts are a thing of the past. Come and trial one now in store.

Hockley v Burhill A team of eight pairs achieved a convincing victory in this first match on the impressive old course of Burhill. Sadly, the greens had just received their first autumn tining and dressing, but the team adapted well. The Burhill team hosted us superbly in their regal clubhouse once owned by the second Duke of Wellington. We look forward to the return fixture at Hockley in 2019. |

Junior Open
Our Junior Open held last Friday saw some of the best juniors in the County compete on our course. I am very pleased to say the winner was Tom Chalk from Hockley, pictured with Captain Damian Cain, on a score of two under par, 140.
Tom also won the nett trophy on nett 132. Tom has worked very hard with me this year and its now starting to show in his results.
These events don’t run themselves, so I would like to thank Paul Brown, Tracy and Scott for organising the day with special thanks to Adrian Nicol and Colin Field for staying all day to do the registration, starting and the co-ordinate scores.

Mixed Open
A slightly reduced field of 33 pairs took part in this years Mixed Open on Sunday. As usual the competition was played in a friendly social spirit with many of visitors complementing on the condition of the course. So, a big thank you to Doug and his team.
There were some impressive scores in the Greensomes format with Ian and Sarah Moore from Cams Hall taking fourth place with 39 points, but losing out on countback to Mandy Tennant from Bramshott Hill and Robert Tennant from Bramshaw.
|
Runners up on the day with 41 points were Claire Bird from Ashley Wood and Sam Bird from Druids Heath, but the main spoils were taken by Emma Hardy from Dudsbury and our own Gary Whitfield with an impressive 42 points and to round off his day Gary also took the nearest the pin prize on the 16th.
Special thanks go to Tom, Jenni and the catering team for providing a superb buffet after play, to Tracy for setting up the prize table, to Scott for delivering drinks to the players out on the course, to Monica Finlayson and Nick Goater for registration and to John Fisher and Ash Marshall for acting as markers due to the uneven number of pairs.
Finally, to Adrian Nicol for spending all day at the club dealing with the players and visitors’ questions, he then moved onto scoring and prize giving. Captain Damian is pictured presenting Emma and Gary with their prizes.

On the Course...
The winner of the extra Ladies Mid-Week Medal was Nikki Stilwell with a nett 74, beating Ann Anthony on a countback. |
When tour pros are playing in big events, like the PGA Championship this week, they’ll always have relatively new wedges in their bag to maximise their spin, because worn wedges mean less control.
|
| Why do grooves matter? The grooves are the sole contact point between your ball and the club, imparting backspin to help lift the ball into the air. R&D testing has revealed that after 125 rounds, wedges spin 2,000rpm less than wedges with new grooves and consequently roll 14 feet further on landing - which is huge. What causes wear? All grooves will wear slowly over time due to a number of factors, including gradual wear from play, but golf's equipment manufacturers work hard to limit this. |
| Need to upgrade? Grooves are particularly important on wedges, where pinpoint control is crucial. If yours are looking worn like on the first image above, why not consider the PING Glide 2.0 Stealth wedge (above), which has specialised milled grooves designed to increase spin control on full and partial shots in both dry and wet conditions. It also boasts a half-groove near the leading edge to significantly increase spin on low strikes. |
