The secret life of Jo Russell
Come and have a drink with Jo at Hockley and hear about HART, a voice for the voiceless. On Wednesday, 26 September at 6:00pm Hockley member Jo Russell will be giving a talk on her work with the Human Rights Charity HART (Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust). |
She will focus on her recent trips to the remotest parts of Sudan and Burma bravely crossing borders (illegally but unashamedly) to help abused and abandoned refugees who have little or no access to humanitarian aid. Mistreated by their own governments and hidden from the rest of the world these people retain their dignity and spirit in the face of starvation, genocide and torture. Their stories will shock you and their resilience and cheerfulness will inspire you.

Try a Garmin GPS for FREE Golf's a game where you need to utilise all the help you're given. One specific way that has seen a huge boom in recent years is the use of GPS devices, which are particularly useful when it comes to knowing distances to the front, middle and back of greens, as well as hazards and doglegs. Throughout September, we're giving you the chance to 'Try Before you Buy' on selected Garmin devices, including the Approach S20 watch. What do you have to lose? |

Titleist Speed Project arriving soon As the name suggests, Titleist's new metalwoods are all about speed and distance. If you're an avid watcher of golf on TV, you may have seen some of the world's best golfers - Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott to name a few - using the new TS woods from Titleist over the past few months. Well, we're delighted to announce they'll be landing in-store this month so that you can add some distance to your game. Seniors Open
The Seniors held their annual Open Golf Day last Wednesday and hosted a field of 67 players, 46 of whom were guests representing 30 clubs from near and far. The weather was very kind allowing everyone to enjoy the course in great conditions.
Thanks to Doug and his team for a rapid recovery of greens and tees following the previous week’s maintenance program. Thanks also to the two starters and four ladies who provided much appreciated refreshments for the players at their halfway points.
After their game, the players enjoyed a superb running carvery served up by Tom and his team, before the day’s prizes were presented. The guests were divided into two divisions, with six prizes in each along with a few incidental prizes for such things as nearest the pin, and nearest the centre line. One of these prizes was for nearest the pin in 3 on the 18th, and that was tied by two players both of whom scored eagles! Another eagle was won on the 10th, which deservedly warranted a special prize due to its relative uniqueness.
The overall winner of the Trophy for the guests was Tam McCartney from South Winchester with 44 points playing off 14.
|
There were separate prizes for Hockley members, and the Salver and overall first place was won by David Greenhalgh with 41 points.
Congratulations to them and all the prize winners. A raffle was also held during the day in aid of the Captains’ charities. This raised £455, thanks to everyone who donated prizes.

Sonny Sharpe Trophy
"In overcast and breezy conditions, a reduced field of 39 teed off in this year’s Sonny Sharpe Trophy. After the recent maintenance week, the course is getting back to its best and our thanks go to Doug and his team for all of their hard work.
The morning medal round proved to be very close with 14 players shooting below their handicap with Graham Taylor and Dave Daish leading the way with nett 67's. The afternoon stableford round was just as competitive with 15 players shooting nett level par or better.
Once the afternoon stableford points were deducted from the morning nett medal score our overall winner was late entry Terry Semmence with a final total of 27 (68-41). Runner up was the morning leader Graham Taylor with 30 (67-37) closely followed by last year’s winner Tony Taylor still on 31 (68-37) and Andrew White on 32 (71-39).
Captain Damian is pictured presenting Terry with the Sonny Sharpe Trophy.

|
I would like to thank Alan Boucher and Geoff Roberts for giving up their time to act as starters and to the Pro Team for setting up the competition and their help throughout the day".
Adie Nicol - Competitions and Handicaps
We must thank Adie for staying all day to do registration, collating the scores and doing the prize presentation with Damian.

The Etretat Twinning
In glorious weather, on a fine golf course, in a wonderful setting the Hockley team were once again successful, which enabled Peter White to receive the Henderson Putter from French Life Captain Paul Hopital. Brilliant comradery and a great weekend all round. We hope for greater participation in the 2019 home match on 27/28 April. |

Tight at the top
The fourth round of the Junior Triangular competition was played this weekend at South Winchester Golf Club. Good competition was enjoyed by Hockley and South players but Royal were not able to field any team at all, very disappointing! Scoring was very close with South making 163 points and Hockley 162 points, score of the day was Luke Evans with a great 40 points. The match scores now stand at Hockley 654, South 650 and Royal 387, so still a slender lead and only two matches to play. |
Chilbolton & Habin Cup
A small entry in the Chilbolton Cup on Saturday and our winner, retaining the trophy was Gill Quick with 37 points. The overall winner of the Habin Cup was Jose Kellenberger.

Hezlet Trophy
Hockley ladies won the Hezlet Trophy on Sunday beating Ferndown in the final which is held every year at Brokenhurst. The team playing off scratch of Chris Quinn, Helen Bailey, Beth Goater, Judie Lewis and Jo Russel won 3-2.
Hockley last won this competition in 2013 but enjoyed success on Sunday, 9 September with Beth Goater turning around being two down to win the last three holes and thus the match. Our thanks to the caddies as well.

Sightlines on putters might seem like a nice design, but they are there for a reason as they help you aim your putts more accurately, and help you centre the ball on your putter. But with so many different styles, it can be hard to know which one will aid you the most. |
It’s up to you Odyssey’s Red Ball putter features some of the most sophisticated alignment technology on the market. The innovative Red Ball in the scope of the putter allows you to consistently get into the correct set-up position over the ball. Add Odyssey's Versa high contrast technology that helps you align the putter better, and this putter is going to be very helpful for a lot of golfers.
|
|
Something different Alternatively, you might be a fan of Odyssey's O-Works Marxman Red putter, which is also available in a black finish. If you have alignment issues with your putting then this model has been designed specifically for golfers like you, with a full-length alignment aid extending right to the back edge of the putter for improved performance. |
