Mixed Match report
On a glorious late summer day at Hockley the regular stalwarts who support the mixed matches turned up and enjoyed a great day of golf against our close neighbours from Corhampton. The golf was closely fought with most matches finishing on the last three holes. The good humour and friendly attitude displayed by all players made the golf very enjoyable.
We received many plaudits for the quality of the course which has survived the hot summer weather better than many. The result was a very friendly half with a score of three and a half to each side.
The day finished with a lovely meal in the clubhouse consumed in a lively bubbly atmosphere. We hope more members will help support these very enjoyable events next year.

Gales Hockley Final
Hockley hosted the Gales Hockley Over 50's Knockout Final for the 48th consecutive year on Saturday, 15 September. Jointly sponsored by Fullers Brewery (formerly Gales/Marstons) , Hockley GC, Brokenhurst GC and Liphook GC put out teams of high quality and produced a match worthy of the Final.
Brokenhurst GC are previous winners of the competition, they had last won in 2005 but Liphook GC had never collected the Gales Hockley Trophy. In perfect conditions, two strong sides produced a very exciting contest, but two of the nine singles matches were the only ones to go past the 15th hole. Liphook GC eventually won 5½ - 3½ and, following a formal dinner at which the Captain, Damian Cain was in attendance, the Gales Hockley Trophy was presented to Bill Wadsworth, Team Captain of Liphook GC. |
Chris Wiles, Team Captain of Brokenhurst GC received the Gales Hockley Salver. Both teams thanked the membership for their ‘kind hospitality and their permission to play at a first-class course.
As with all these events they take a lot of time behind the scenes to make them a success and special thanks go to organisers Paul Mantell and Derek Noyce for their hard work in making the competition run so smoothly.

9-hole qualifiers
There will be a series of 9-hole qualifying Stableford competitions this autumn. The first one will be on Thursday, 4 October 2018, and then four in November and two in December. Entry will be on the PSI in the usual way. The fee for these will be £2.00.
A separate card has been set up for the first nine holes of the course, with the stroke indices adjusted accordingly. The course has been measured and approved for these short competitions.
In addition, you are likely to receive additional shots, there is a chart in the changing room, which shows the conversion for a 9-hole competition. For example, I have a handicap of 15.0, but for a 9-hole competition I will receive nine shots (50% would only give me eight shots). This will hopefully make entering these competitions more attractive.
The committee hopes that you will take advantage of these short qualifiers during the winter months, and if you want to know any more details, there is a notice on the board in the changing room.

Congratulations to Alison Baker on winning the Weekend Stableford with excellent 42 points.

With the Ryder Cup coming up next week, we can expect plenty of tense moments, particularly on the greens. You’ll probably notice that players on both sides will have the ability to hole out under huge amounts of pressure – who can forget Ian Poulter’s clutch putt on the 16th green at Medinah in 2012? |
Find a putter you can trust To replicate these kind of putts, whether that's in the monthly medal or playing for money with your friends, you need to choose a flatstick you can trust. Why not try out one of Scotty Cameron’s Futura putters? The current range involves several high-MOI mallets with tour-proven shapes, as well as improved alignment features and feel. Some of the best players in the world, such as Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, have Scotty putters in the bag, so you can be sure you’ll be in good company. |
