I hope you're all having a great week on and off the course, enjoy another edition bringing you up to date with all the latest news from Hockley Golf Club.
Enjoy this week's read! |
Keeping you up to date
Focus this week has been on the scrub clearing work on the left-hand side of the 1st fairway. All of the scrub we are removing is self-sown hawthorn, nettles, brambles and holly, which are restricting the growth of the much more established Ash and Oak trees. I know that Ash dieback is an issue, not just in this country but all over Europe, however apart from one on the left hand side of the 18th fairway which is going to be removed, I have seen no other sign of this disease spreading to other Ash trees. |

Work around the ladies 18th tee, left hand side of the 1st green and around the 16th tee has also been carried out this week, to remove unsightly weeds and nettles.
We will continue the scrub clearance works on the 1st all the way up to the back of the white tee on the 2nd. This will increase the light and air flow to the 1st fairway and the tees on the 2nd, which at the moment are spending most of the time in the shade.

Pocket aces! Congratulations to Danny Francis who had a ‘Hole in One’ on the 5th Hole whilst playing in the Kelly Salvers last week. This is Danny’s third ‘Hole in One’ and thanks very much for the drink Danny. Another ‘Hole in One’ was made by Paul Telfer on Saturday on the 16th. Dave Hughes posted this picture on Facebook, along with “Had the great pleasure of playing with these two today. Smashed it as a team whilst witnessing Scotland and Southampton FC’s EX right back make seven birdies and a hole in one. Great day well played Telfer and Ellis”.

Captain/Pro Challenge
Our first Captain/Pro match took place this week and as in previous years we've started slowly, in our defence a new pairing of Phil Jay and Mark Rookyard played very nicely to beat us 4&3. |
However, our other opponents of immediate past Captain Damian Cain and Pete Crowe were playing just as steady as we were and found themselves two down with two to play.
After I missed putts on 17 and 18 to win the match we made our way down the first, sadly, we hit three poor shots and our opponents finished closer than us in three.
A bit of a gap to the next match as Tracy and I are away next week and then Nigel is away. We will lick our wounds and be ready for the next game. |

On the Course...
Congratulations to Wendy Evans who had her first ‘Hole in One’ on the 5th Hole at Hockley last week using a 5 wood.
The winner of the Midweek Stableford was Lesley Milne with 34 points.

The Kelly Salvers - Tuesday, 23 October We had a fantastically sunny day for this annual Autumn get together of the Ladies and Seniors of the club. The 24 competitors all met at 09.15 with unrestrained enthusiasm for the blind draw for this Mixed Greensomes Stableford. The draw delivered a truly sociable mix of pairings with many pairs playing together for the first time despite being members of the club for many years. |
The course played superbly with everyone enjoying the golf and achieving a good pace of play. The winning pair on the day with a superb 41 points was John Taylor and Sally Haigh.
The pairings of Mike Kelly/Wendy Evans and Danny Francis/Lesley Milne finished joint runners up on 37 points.
The day ended with a lovely meal followed by the presentation of the Salvers to the winners. The Salvers were presented by Geoff Roberts, the immediate past Seniors Captain as the current Seniors Captain was the recipient.
The perfect start for John and good luck for the rest of the year.
David and Wendy Greenhalgh

Winter is coming, but we know that won't prevent you avid golfers getting out on the course to face biting winds, muddy shoes and, most of all, rain. Lots and lots of rain. With this in mind, it's more important than ever to have a golf bag which will keep your clubs and belongings dry during a downpour. |
Introducing Titleist's StaDry Deluxe This is where a cart bag like the StaDry Deluxe comes into play. You'll certainly be keeping your valuables dry if you opted to upgrade your golf bag to this offering over the winter thanks to Titleist’s StaDry waterproof technology, which ensures maximum coverage from the rain during your round. Weighing in at 2.9 kgs, it's also incredibly lightweight, making it easy to lift to and from the car boot to your trolley.
