Captain/Pro Challenge
Another lovely day on Saturday for our Captain/Pro match against Paul Mantell and Mike Simister with Martin Osbourne and a new member Craig Parker. As usual we had a reasonable start, a bit of a wobble in the middle and then finished better. Although everyone hit the ball okay we did manage to hit it a little bit too often! Craig, especially off the tee was very steady, so I don't expect him to stay on his handicap for very long.
Back to the match, we were level with Mike and Paul and 2up on Martin and Craig after nine. Both games stayed close for the next few holes with both pairs trading pars and bogeys against us, then came our devastating run of pars from the 11th to close out both games on the 16th. Perhaps our victory against Paul Mantel was the spur he needed to help him to victory the following day in the Hockley Winter Foursomes? On the evidence of how he played on Saturday, his partner on Sunday Howard Barton must have had the game of his life! So, congratulations to them.
Next week we have a couple of golfing heavy weights with new partners, Howard Gleadow with David Atkinson and Keith Eames with Steven Evans, fingers crossed for the same weather as this week!

Winter Foursomes The Hockley Winter Foursomes, played in the revised 18 hole Stableford format, took place on Sunday. With perfect golfing weather, a field of 34 pairs including 17 from visiting clubs took up the challenge. Once again, many compliments were received from the visitors regarding the excellent conditions of our course. We should all say a big thank you and well done to Doug and his team for the hard work carried out through the winter months. |
With the course playing long, only four teams managed to break par. In fourth place with 37 points were Hockley pair Mike Henry and Martin Gill who lost out on countback to another Hockley pair, Paul Telfer and Gary Whitfield.
Runners up with 38 points were Dan Sainsbury and Sam Payne from Royal Winchester and winners of The Winter Foursomes with 39 points were the Hockley pair of Paul Mantell and Howard Barton. Paul and Howard are pictured collecting their Winter Foursomes trophies from Captain Nigel.
Many thanks to Tom and his team for the after-match catering and to Paul Brown and Adie Nicol for all of their work behind the scenes.

75 yards? Up-and-down for me... |
The majority of golfers know how far they hit their driver and irons with a full swing, but wedges require you to be a lot more accurate if you want to start shooting better scores. So, whilst it can be useful to know how far a full PW or LW goes, you'll benefit far more from dialling in your wedges so you can hit specific distances that you regularly find yourself with on the course. |
Give yourself options You'll notice that different swings with each wedge will result in yardages that overlap - see table above. This is important as it'll give you options when considering the conditions. For example, if you're facing a strong breeze, we'd suggest going up a club and utilising a shorter swing so the ball flies lower with less spin, helping it to penetrate through the wind. |
Dial in with Cleveland We'd recommend having a wedge system of the same brand and model, so you remove any variables in feel and spin across wedges. One model that we love is Cleveland's RTX-4 wedge. Some of you may have previous generations of RTX - which stands for Rotex Face Technology - but this current model has the sharpest grooves yet for more spin and maximum control around the greens. 18 bounce-grind combinations available between 46 and 64 degrees mean that a custom fitting is key if you want to get your next purchase exactly right. |
