Welcome to another exciting edition of the weekly newsletter bringing you up to date with all the latest news and offers from Hockley Golf Club. Enjoy this week's read. |
Your Captain needs you!
If you are thinking of coming to the Race Night on Friday, 29 March please sign up this weekend at the latest. Numbers are very low at the moment and it is looking likely that it will have to be cancelled which is a shame as it will mean a cancellation charge which will come from the Captain’s Charity money collected to date. Also, a reminder that the bids (minimum £200) for a fourball at West Hill are open until this Friday, 22 March, note the summer green fees at West Hill are £105 per player. |
Fran's students say thank you to Hockley
Last year Hockley member Jo Russell and her sister-in-law Fran gave a talk about the charity HART (Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust). Jo is a trustee for HART, one of Hockley’s chosen charities this year, which provides aid and advocacy to people who have been persecuted and abused by their own government.
Fran, an experienced English teacher, has now returned from Loi Tai Leng, a displacement camp on the Thai/Burma border where she set up a much-needed English Language Programme. |
On Fran’s first day she was overwhelmed yet delighted when 50 students turned up to her after school conversation club.
The ability to speak English is vital for these students who have been driven out of their villages in Shan state by the Burmese military, they are more likely to get a place in Thai universities and access safe and legal work if they can speak English. |
|
Over 800 children attend the school, over half of whom board either because they have been orphaned or abandoned due to the conflict, or because the school is too far to travel to every day from their villages but is their only access to education. Click here to continue the read. |
Captain/Pro Challenge
Well, after a shocking Saturday, a better Sunday weather wise seemed to bring most of the membership out. We played a couple of familiar foes in Graham Light and Peter White with Sean Dolphin and Indie Bilkhoo this week, we started with an unusual tee shot on the first by our Captain (in front of the ladies), although I must say he didn't do a lot wrong.
I think playing with two Hockley legends in Graham and Peter, Peter being one of the Captains I've lost the fewest number of Capt/Pro matches (4) and two trainee legends in Sean and Indie seemed to inspire him. As with a lot of matches we've played this year they were very close until, unusually for us, we had a late par burst to ease away from our foes.
On 11 Indie had the highs and lows of golf, after not his best tee shot, Sean then hit a great fairway wood which ran into the cross-fairway bunkers, Indie then hit what all of us voted the shot of the day, coming out of there just short of the green, incredible shot. Unfortunately, Sean rolled it up to two feet and Indie then missed it to hand us a half. That’s golf, don't you love it? That kept us 1up on Sean and Indie and 2up on Graham and Peter, as we moved onto a par run, we closed out both games by the 16th. Two great pairs to play with and one more weekend to go, our last matches are against Paul Brown and Adie Nicol with Nick Bell and Chris Boswell, so let's hope we can finish in style.

Masters Sweepstake
We now countdown to The Masters, only three weeks away and our Masters Draw is now up and running. Who are you tipping to win? Will Patrick Reed defend his title? Or could Rory surprise us, especially after a great weekend at TPC Sawgrass, if you’re not sure then why not enter our Masters Sweepstake.
For only £5 per ticket you have the chance to win the 1st prize of over a £100 to spend in the Pro Shop, this would certainly knock a dent in the new driver or trolley you may be considering purchasing. We will also be running daily prizes of £10 each for the best and worst scores and the main prizes will go to 5th place.

What's new?
The Spring/Summer range from JRB and Swing Out Sister is fully on display in the shop, if you buy any two items of Ladies clothing, we will give you a JRB visor FREE, available in three colours. A wide range of Skechers shoes are also available to match these outfits.
Not surprisingly a short report this week as the wild, wet and windy conditions put paid to most golf last week, including the final Fun Morning; all credit, then, to the determination of the five brave souls who turned up in hope last Tuesday, but instead spent an enjoyable morning playing bridge - and to Julie Moss, winner of Sunday's Stableford.
