I hope you've all had a good week on and off the golf course and it’s Masters week which usually means the start of the golfing season! A little wet and cold for now, but hopefully a little Augusta sunshine might make its way over and get you all back out playing. Enjoy the read. |

Captain/Pro Challenge - The Final The Captain/Pro Final was played in glorious weather with a small field of the nine winners (one team couldn’t make the day) and the Captain and Pro. The format for the day was a foursomes Stableford and the trophy was won by Jack Stubbington and Scott Coomber with 35 points narrowly beating three teams on 34. The prize pot for the day was taken by Luke Hodgetts and Graham Taylor who came in with a fantastic 39 points. |
|
Graham was a late substitute for Dennis Hodgetts who is suffering from a back injury, but this meant they couldn’t win the trophy. Thank you to everyone who entered this year and gave so generously to the Captain’s charities, £1080 was raised over the 36 matches. Special thanks also to Tracy for managing the tee closures and the scoresheets and, of course, my playing partner and your head Pro, Gary Stubbington. I’ve had a great time and his support and patience through the Winter has been fantastic and very much appreciated.
As I said at the prizegiving, some of those shots he has played from the trees by the 5th green had to be seen to be believed. |
On the Course... The first Major of the season The Tank Cup and Wells trophy was played on Saturday in rather chilly weather! This didn’t prevent 88 members from taking part.
The winner of the Tank Cup was Sean Green with a nett 66 whilst Dave Coumbe took the honours in the Wells Trophy firing a nett 72.

It's time to upgrade The popular battery trade-in is back we will give you £25 OFF a new Lithium battery when you trade in your old battery, working or not. A standard 18-hole lead acid battery will average 250 rounds before needing to be replaced, a lithium will last four times as long as that and averages 1000 rounds of golf before needing to be replaced.
Lithium batteries are quicker charging, last longer and work out cheaper in the long run than the standard Lead Acid alternatives, so it's time to say goodbye if you're still using one. Click here to learn more. |

Tip of the week Three ways to pre-set pure imapact Check out my downswing here. I call this the delivery position. The closer you get to impact the less you can do or undo before you hit the ball. You're basically on cruise control. That said, you can monitor this position when you practice. Check three things: 1. Weight to front foot You can see my knees are shifting toward the target and I'm starting to roll onto my right instep. |
|
This means I'm making a proper weight shift to my left side which will help me strike the ball, then the ground, for crisp contact. Also, I'm posting up on my left leg, pushing off the ground. That upward thrust is a major speed generator. 2. Trail arm still bent At this point in the downswing, a lot of amateurs have straightened the trail arm; they try to use it to create power from the top of the swing. When it stays bent, it keeps the club on an inside path to the ball, which is best for power. The trail arm shouldn't fully straighten until the club is a couple of feet past impact. 3. Wrist angle retained With the butt end of the club back in front of my right thigh, the shaft is parallel to the ground, which proves I've kept my wrists hinged. Players who think they need to flip the face closed or help the ball up unhinge the wrists too soon. Keeping them loaded gives you a burst of speed at impact and prevents hitting the ground before the ball. Give this drill a try and let us know how you get on. Click here if you're interested in booking a lesson. |
A win for Helen Firstly, my congratulations to Helen Bailey, winner of the Ladies Medal Winners Salver on Sunday with a nett 70 and to the runners-up, Helen Vidal-Allen and Chris Quinn. Helen sent this complimentary email in to the Pro team: “I just wanted to say thank you to Chris for my lesson last weekend, it worked a treat as I hit 14 greens on Sunday and won the Medal Winners Salver. It also knocked .5 off my handicap to 2.8 which is a bit scary.” If you need help with any part of your game give us a call on 01962 713165 (2) or click here to book online. |
Stoneham Cup team success Hot off the press! Congratulations to our Stoneham Cup team who won a close first match today - with a special mention for Jose Kellenberger, who battled valiantly to the 20th!
With our first Stoneham Cup Match being played this week, a Triangular Friendly and the first Mixed Match of the season, a timely reminder to us all to continue to sign up for as many of the later matches as possible. June Glasspell, Nicky Stilwell, Lesley Milne and Wendy Greenhalgh, respectively, all need our support throughout the coming months and will be delighted to hear from you. While some of the matches provide a really challenging experience, they also offer the opportunity to play other courses and to have a lot of fun.

A driver is a powerful beast, sometimes too powerful if a hole has a hazard within range. In this scenario, you have a plethero of options to choose from, but there is one that is often overlooked. |
Picture the scene You're stood on a par-4 tee box and there’s a water hazard 240 yards away. What do you do? Many of you will reach for your longest iron on auto-pilot, however a custom-fitted fairway wood might just be the perfect solution; getting you further down the hole and closer to the green. | |
|
Why is this often overlooked? A lot of golfers don't have confidence in hitting their fairway wood because, quite simply, they don't use it enough. But with technology to help you hit them better - such as a Tungsten weight in PING's G410 fairway wood that increases forgiveness - it's time you gave them another go. |
Custom fitting is key We're delighted to see so many of you come to us for a custom fit when you're after a new driver or set of irons, but why does it stop there? A custom fitting is so important in ensuring you get the most from any new purchase, whether that's a driver, fairway wood or putter. |
