What a story, what a comeback! Tiger Woods win is HUGE for golf and sport, he produced a dazzling finish to win his fifth Master’s title and end an 11-year wait to claim a 15th Major. A great Sunday afternoon and we didn’t have to stay up late to witness it.

What a shot!
I just had to include this great picture of the course taken over the weekend by our greenkeeper Ryan. The course is coming along nicely after maintenance week and with the good weather forecast, I am hoping to see many of you this Easter weekend.

A fond farewell
Sad news last week when quiet, yet popular member Bill Ferris passed away, our thoughts are with his family. They would like to thank the members and staff that dealt with the difficult situation out on the course so swiftly and professionally.

Hockley Hares and Stableford
28 ladies played in the Hockley Hares competition on a lovely, sunny morning last Thursday and it was a pleasure, not only to welcome three new members, but also to present one of them, Valerie Jones, and her partner, Judie Lewis, with the winners' trophies. The runners-up were Pat Munro and Jose Kellenberger. My congratulations to them and to the winner of the Stableford on Saturday, yet another of our new members, Sophie Hall, with 39 points, and to runner-up, Kay Walshe, with 33 points. |
Hampshire Ladies County Championship Week
In just a month's time, Hockley will be host to Hampshire Ladies County Championship week from Monday, 13 to Friday, 17 May. While I trust that many of you will be participating, if county golf is not for you and you have not entered, I am hoping that you may be able to spare just a few hours, particularly on the Monday and Tuesday, to assist with ball-spotting. So, please, can I ask you to keep a look-out for a sign-up sheet, which will be posted in the changing room over the next week or so, and your help and support will be much appreciated.

Play your part
We have now played five of our summer friendly matches, with three home wins and two away losses. Our match at home against Alresford on 15 April produced some excellent golf in windy conditions, with one group managing a half against a gross 72 from the opposition. Tom's food is being very well received as always. Our next match is another home one against Basingstoke and then we have six away matches.
You can see the schedule on the web site: Go to competitions - matches and look for the Seniors friendly matches. More players are always welcome, you can sign up on the sheet in the clubhouse or select "view all squads" and join the seniors’ friendly squad. Then you can indicate your availability on the web site for the whole season. John Taylor Seniors Captain 2019

All square
The away leg of the annual match against Lee On the Solent Golf Club was held on Sunday in pleasant, but cold conditions. So, the welcome start of coffee and brandy (or whisky as the home captain doesn’t like brandy) was very welcome. The morning 9-hole greensomes were won by Hockley 4 ½ to 2 ½ with the home side winning by the same margin in the afternoon 4BBB to leave us all square for the home leg at Hockley in August. The match was played in its usual good spirit with good natured banter between the teams. Special thanks to Martin Gill for his pre match organisation and his work on the day.

Do you often find yourself stuck between clubs? One club will launch too far beyond your target whilst the other will leave you short. If so, you're either very unlucky or you need to come and see us for a gapping session. |
| Example of poor distance gapping
|
|
Distance gapping is the art of putting your set together whilst ensuring each gap between one club and the next is equal. Take your wedges as an example. Say you have a PW with around 46 degrees of loft and sand wedge at 56 degrees; this 10-degree gap could leave you with a distance gap of around 30 yards or more! What do you do if you need to play a shot right in the middle of those distances? The same can be said at the other end of your set, but usually this will involve two clubs going the same distance. If you have a 3-iron in the bag as well as a hybrid and a 5-wood, chances are you'll be hitting them similar distances - so it's time for one to go! If any of this is resonating with you, then let’s get you booked in before you head out for your next round.
