Welcome to another exciting edition of the weekly newsletter bringing you up to date with all the latest news and offers from Hockley Golf Club. I hope you've all had a good week on and off the golf course. Enjoy the read. |
Thank you Hockley
Many thanks to all of those who came to Jo’s talk on the Myanmar orphans. The evening started well when Wayne Brackstone’s team and their opponents gave very generous donations, perhaps fuelled by a couple of beers! Many thanks to Wayne and then to Nigel Newman who introduced the evening with a hilarious, but mercifully brief introduction.
A huge thank you to the 70 people who came, they heard how Hockley’s fundraising has been put to good use. Thanks to Hockley we have funded the first ever teacher training programme, the construction of a dam which supplies the village with much needed electricity, water and crop irrigation. Every penny you have donated has gone directly to these desperate people, your generosity has had a material impact on hundreds of people who have lost everything but still have hope and ambition.
|
A further £3000 was raised on the night which is £6000 with the matched funding from our corporate sponsor. Thank you to Hockley for choosing HART as one of your charities and to our amazing bar staff, our manager Paul and to Kay Walshe, Kate Colwill, June Glasspel and Judie Lewis for their help on the night.
As HART’s founder and CEO says, “We cannot do everything, but we must not do nothing”.

County Championship Week
A challenging golf course, in superb condition and bathed in sunshine was the setting for last week's Hampshire Ladies County Championship Week, this year hosted by Hockley.
Over four beautiful days, some 200 ladies from clubs all over Hampshire competed and the golf more than lived up to expectation. Excellent scores throughout the week culminated in some close matches over the final two days.
Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) once again proved a worthy winner to become the 2019 County Champion; while the winners of the Challenge Salver and Challenge Bowl were familiar names - Bridget Moore (Meon Valley & Hockley- pictured) and Katie Hewson (Stoneham). |
|
Respectively, many of you may remember Katie (nee Bryon) as a junior here at Hockley; and the Bronze Division Champion was our own Monica Finlayson. Our congratulations to them all and to everyone who participated and who, we hope, enjoyed the experience of a wonderful week of golf.
(For the complete list of results see the HLCGA website)
And finally, well done too, to all those Hockley members who supported the event as Starters and Ball-spotters; without your help the week would not have run so smoothly and been so successful. Our grateful thanks to all of you for giving so generously of your time; your help and friendliness towards the competitors only added to their whole experience and was much appreciated.

A record-breaking Delhi Cup 2019
The 2019 Delhi Cup Championship was held on Saturday ,18 May, the first event in the Hampshire Golf Union Order of Merit. We had absolutely the best weather and a perfectly prepared golf course. My thanks go to the course team, not only was the course perfect for this event, the Hampshire County Ladies Championship Week feedback was only positive about how good Hockley Golf Course is.

With a full field of Hampshire’s best players and a perfect course conditions we were hoping for some great scoring and possibly a new course record. This turned out to be a golf tournament to be remembered for all the right reasons. During the morning play Owen Grimes (Stoneham Golf Club) lead the field by five shots with a superb amateur course record of 64, seven under par with several players on 69 and 70 including one of our own in Paul Telfer.
The afternoon play commenced at 13:15 and not long into the round, reports were coming through of another great score being produced by Alex Talbot (Stoneham Golf Club) and a play off could be a possibility.
Finally, with the mornings course record beaten by Alex with a tremendous score 63, 8 under par adding to his morning round of 70 totalling 9 under par for the day and Owen scoring a 68 three under for his afternoon just beating his fellow club member by one shot with a total of 10 under par for the day. Owen is pictured receiving the trophy from the Club President Mr Bob Stilwell.

My thanks to all the Hockley teams, Course Bar, Catering and our Professionals. The day would not be as good or enjoyable for the competitors without the smooth organisation of our volunteers: Carole Cullen registration, Tony Cullen, Graham Light, Geoff Roberts and Trevor Nice starters, Mr Bob Stilwell (President) Gary Stubbington for the post golf welcome speech and presentations and the Hampshire Golf Union Referees. Thank you all.

Most overlooked club in the bag? |
Thankfully, the penny has dropped when it comes to the importance of getting custom fitted for a new driver or set of irons. Unfortunately, we still see the vast majority of golfers overlook this process when it comes to their fairway woods, but why? |
| How often do you use yours? |
|
“I wouldn’t use it often enough” “It's too expensive” “It's not necessary” Yeah, I guess if you’re not concerned with shooting lower scores and maximising your potential then a custom fitted fairway wood isn’t that important. However, if improving your game is something you want to achieve, then having a full set of custom fitted clubs is vital, especially when it comes to gapping between your driver and irons.

PING G410 fairway woods One option that we'll certainly get you to try is this beauty from PING. A combination of its tungsten weight, forged face and low centre of gravity produce a fairway wood that is easy to launch and that flies miles, too.
So, let’s get you booked in for a custom fitting with a member of the team and harness your potential with the most overlooked club in the bag. |
