A great insight
At ten to six in the morning, on the longest day of the year, I met up with Doug and the course team to spend a day with them to see the work involved to keep the course in the superb condition that we enjoy. Whilst most of the team were out cutting the fairways and cutting and rolling the greens, Doug took me out to change the hole positions on the two putting greens, then it was out on the course raking bunkers and taking stimp readings at various times and on different greens. The aim is to keep the level between 10 and 11 and our readings were all coming out at around 10 1/2. Further complications to keep the speed and consistent roll are the different bases that some of the greens have been built on over the years. |
I learnt a lot about the different elements of course maintenance and what is dealt with in house and when specialist contractors are brought in. The whole operation runs like clockwork and for Doug, it is a passion as well as a job and he is well supported by an enthusiastic, motivated and skilled team.
Most of their day to day work is completed before most of us are up and everyone knows what needs doing and just gets on with it. Like all good teams, there is a good sense of camaraderie and humour and everyone seems to enjoy the job. The next day was the Men’s Club Championship and that was an even earlier start; Doug was in at 4.30am.
The greenkeepers are probably the least known of the Hockley teams, out in all weathers, allowing us to play our golf all year round. Give them a wave if you see them out on the course, even better, buy them a beer!

Summer friendlies
We are now nearly halfway through our season of Summer Friendlies, and I would like to thank all the seniors who are supporting these matches. More volunteers are always welcome, either on the tick sheet in the clubhouse, or online.
This week we had two home matches, one against Waterlooville which we lost 2.5 to 3.5, and the other against Ferndown which we won 4.5 to 1.5. Our visitors continue to be very complimentary about Hockley and our catering. Interestingly, many of them mention how much they look forward to playing our 18th. On Friday we played a Knighton Heath Plate singles match at Wareham, who beat us 7:3. Many thanks to Gordon Dewis for captaining the Knighton Heath matches.

Give it your best shot
Ladies Invitation on Tuesday, 16 July invite your guests to play our great course and the entry fee includes a two-course lunch and coffee. Enter in the ladies locker room.
The Ping 4BBB Competition last Tuesday saw a fine win for Kay Free and Jean White with 38 points; the runners-up were Joan Powell and Viv Stevens with 32 points. The week's two Stableford competitions, on Thursday and Sunday, were won by Judie Lewis, 34 points and Kay Walshe, 39 points, respectively. Congratulations to all.
Just a reminder, ladies, that if you want a challenge when not playing in a competition, we do have the three Eclectic competitions, the third and last of which this year begins next Monday, 1 July and runs until 31 October. The folder with information, instructions and entry forms can be found on the work-top in the changing room; your entry fee should be put in an envelope in the safe. With a limit of just 12 cards in this Summer Eclectic, the challenge to improve your score on each hole is all the greater - and it's in a good cause, all the money raised going towards the Captains' Charities. So, if you've missed out so far this year, why not give it a go.
Before that, however, the forecast bodes well for Ladies Day on Thursday - always a lot of fun and a highlight of our year, I wish everyone a most enjoyable day.

Midweek Stableford
The winner of the Midweek Stableford was Mike Henry with 40 points. |
Club Championships/Hodges Trophy
The Club Championship/Hodges Trophy was played on Saturday in ideal weather conditions.
After the morning round the outcome was still very much in the balance with 10 players within five shots of the leader Luke Hodgetts (70) in the gross competition and 24 players within five shots of the leader John Fisher (67) in the nett competition.
After a hard-fought battle in the afternoon, Luke Hodgetts was the deserved winner and retainer of the Club Championship with a gross score of 142 (70 and 72) beating Luke Evans on 143 (74 and 69) with Paul Telfer finishing third a further shot back on 144 (71 and 73).
The winner and retainer of the Hodges Trophy was Luke Evans with a nett 135 (70 and 65). Runner-up was Rob Moore with a nett 137 (71 and 66) with Murray Ellis taking third place with a nett 139 (70 and 69).
Both Lukes are pictured receiving their trophies from Captain Nigel.

There are a few people I would like to thank for their assistance in running this event. The Pro Shop team for setting up the competition and for drafting in reserves after some late withdrawals. Monica Finlayson, Geoff Roberts and Trevor Nice for starting and Paul Brown for processing the scores.
Also, a thank you to Doug and his team for all of their hard work. Many compliments were made by the competitors regarding the look and the setup of the course.
Full results together with the draw for the Scratch Salver have been posted on the website. On a final note, it was disappointing to see so few people stay on for the prizegiving but a big thank you to all of you who did.

Is there a better time than summer to be out playing golf? Silly question, really. So, now you’ve got your cap on and you’re lathered in sun lotion, it’s time to make sure the most important part of your body (arguably) is protected: your eyes. |
| Oakley Mercenary sunglasses
|
|
UV protection You don’t need us to tell you that staring straight at the sun is not the smartest idea, but these sunglasses come with UV protection to keep those harmful rays at bay.
|
Enhanced vision The best thing about the Mercenary is that it comes with Oakley's Dark Prizm lenses, which help to improve colour, contrast and detail for maximum clarity on the course.
|
Stylish look Last but by no means least, these sunnies are incredibly stylish with a modern frame and larger lens shape, meaning you'll happily wear them all day long.
