Senior PGA Championships at The London Club

My frustrating summer continued last week after I missed the cut by one (again) in the Senior PGA Championships at The London Club. I must say a special thanks to my two caddies, Scott Coomber who caddied on Thursday and Tracy who stood in at the last minute on Friday. Also, to member Paul Spooner and his wife Sarah who drove down on Friday to support me.

Time for a short family break now, Tracy and I will be away until Thursday, 15 August, but will be leaving the shop in the very capable hands of Chris and Mark.

Seniors news

A word from the Captain

We have 18 entries for our Seniors Invitation on Friday, 16 Aug, with the first tee time 9:00am. If you would like to submit a late entry, this will be ok but please send it to the office before Friday, 9 August. Entry forms are in the clubhouse.

There are currently 52 entries to our Seniors Open on Wednesday, 4 September, but only three from Hockley members. It would be good to have a few more members to play alongside our visitors, and you would be competing for a separate prize. Forms in the clubhouse or online (don't log in).

Last but not least, we have played 24 of our 33 summer-friendly matches. We had an away win against Corhampton on a very hot summer's day, only to lose the next two matches at home against Rowlands Castle and Broadstone. Our visitors continue to be very impressed with our course and catering.

If you would like to play in a Seniors Friendly match you would be most welcome and there is still time to try one out before the season is over. Most people are now using the online Intelligent Golf system to indicate when they can play, but you can also use the tick sheet in the clubhouse, or just drop me an email.

Ladies news

Latest results

Nine ladies braved the elements and played early last Tuesday in the Grandmothers Salver and returning from the course very wet was our winner Viv Stevens with 31 points.

The Midweek Medal was won by Judie Lewis with a nett 74 and Saturday’s Medal was won by Alison Baker with a nett 70.

Open news

Junior Open

Our Junior Open was held last Friday with a disappointing field of only 19 players. However, this did not prevent the competitors from returning some impressive scores.

The gross competition runner-up was Drew Mackinnon (149) from Southampton and the winner was Luke Evans (pictured)(148) from Hockley.

The nett competition runner-up was Oliver Stuart (135) from Hockley and the winner was Oscar Lapidge (pictured) (134) from Romsey.

The Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Championship was run alongside the morning round with the best boys scores coming from Luke Evans (73 gross) and Oliver Stuart (67 nett) and the best girls scores coming from Lily Walker (81 gross and 69 nett) from North Hants>

Luke, Oliver and Lily now go forward to the national leader board with the chance of gaining entry to the final in Quinta Do Logo, Portugal in November.

Thank you to Colin Field for morning and afternoon starting and to Chris for processing the scores and editing the start sheet several times.

Mixed Open

A bumper field of 44 pairs made up of players from 27 different clubs took part in this year’s Mixed Open on Sunday. As usual, the competition was played in a friendly social spirit with many of visitors complementing the condition of the course. So, a big thank you to Doug and his team.

There were some impressive scores in this Greensomes format with Alison and Paul Fitzpatrick from Dudsbury taking fifth place with 36 points but, losing out on countback to Janice and Stephen Housham from Blacknest. Third place with 37 points went to Kate Colwill from Hockley and her partner Keith Edwards from Leckford. Runners up on the day with 41 points were Terrie Le Quesne and John Morris from Dudsbury but the main spoils were taken by Sally Bradbury from Cams Hall and our own Colin Bradbury with an impressive 44 points.

Special thanks go to Tom and the catering team for providing a superb buffet after play, to Tracy for setting up the prize table and to Alan Boucher for doing a 3 1/2-hour stint as starter.

I must add huge thanks to Adie Nicol for staying all day for both the Junior Open and the Mixed Open and coordinating both events.

Competition news

Midweek Stableford & RAF Cup

The Midweek Stableford was won by Jonathan Hawkins in Division One with 39 points, beating Martin Gill on a countback. Division Two was won by Adrian Harris with 36 points.

An excellent entry into the RAF Cup on Saturday and the new name on the trophy is Mike Fortune with 44 points, beating Paul Telfer on a countback.

Knockout competitions

A reminder that the QUARTER FINALS of the TUTT BOWL and the QUARTER FINALS of the SCRATCH SALVER are to be played by SUNDAY, 11 AUGUST and there will be NO EXTENSIONS.

If your match has been played, please ensure the result has been recorded on BOTH the DRAW SHEET and the PSI. If the winners are not posted by the round completion date the game could be assumed not to have been played and therefore both players/teams could be subject to elimination. WINNERS: please check that the win has been posted.

- Saturday, 10 August - The Centenary Bowl AM/AM - Please remember this is a team of four event, there a few of you signed up as two and three balls. Please check into the Pro Shop BEFORE play and enter your score after play.

- Tuesday, 13 August - Ladies Hornsey Bowl

- Sunday, 8 September - The Sonny Sharpe Trophy is now open for entry on the PSI. 18 holes of medal in the morning and 18 holes of Stableford in the afternoon. The Stableford points are deducted from the nett medal score, the lowest score wins. The field is limited to 66 players and will be balloted by handicap if oversubscribed.

The simple shoe equation

Mathematics can be a complicated subject with all that pi, algebra and calculus floating around, but there is one simple equation we can all understand:

uncomfortable golf shoes = a miserable time for all

Let’s break down this equation further

The main problem here is that walking on hard ground for four hours/18 holes in the summer months can take its toll on our feet.

Blisters and bleeding are common signs that something isn't quite right and the issue will only be exasperated if your golf shoes are worn, cracking or ill-fitting.

Adjust to your surroundings

Driver adjustability has been a marketing buzz term for a number of years now, but how much of a difference will it really make to your game? Well, we decided to find out.

We could bamboozle you with tech speak when it comes to adjustability but there are two key ways in which today's drivers can be adjusted to suit your swing, making a custom fitting more important than ever before.

Hosel adjustability

The first is the ability to adjust loft and lie angles in the hosel. If you're launching your driver too low or high, hosel adjustability allows us to add or take away loft until we get the perfect launch conditions for your swing.

Perimeter weighting

The second is the ability to adjust weights on the sole of the head to favour either a draw, fade or neutral shot shape.

Take Callaway's ultra-fast looking Epic Flash driver for example. A 16-gram moveable weight (as well as an adjustable hosel) can be re-positioned during a custom fitting to help counteract your bad shot.
