Seniors Invitation
Our second Seniors Invitational was held on Friday, 16 August, and despite a very rainy forecast, 12 Hockley seniors and their guests set out playing betterball stableford off 9/10 handicap. In the end, we were very lucky, and the rain did not arrive in earnest until everyone had finished. The winners with a very impressive 48 points were John Fisher and his guest Ian Nicol. Second place with 45 points went to Andy Gradidge and guest Chris Weldon, and in third place with 44 points was Roy Hutson and guest Rick Hassell, who just pipped their playing partners Stephen Moore and Garry Williams on the back nine. As usual, Tom provided an excellent meal for everyone.
The day before, David Morgan and his team had a home win against Stoneham. We had won the away match as well, so it was nice to get the double.
We have over 60 entries for the Seniors Open on Wednesday, 4 September, which is set to be a superb event.

Our future stars
Just a little update on the Junior section activities, the Greenjackets Finals Day was held at Hockley in appalling conditions of heavy rain and gale-force winds. The competition was reduced on arrival to 18 holes from 36, the players eventually went out but were called in after 10 holes and the result was made on the first nine. A sad way to end the competition with Hockley finishing a disappointing third. I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to all that took part in the qualifying and final, a great effort. The 4th round of the Junior Triangular took place this weekend and the team improved their lead again on both of the other clubs, we now lead South by 50 points and Royal by 88 with two rounds to play. Once again, my thanks to all of you who give up your time to play. It is very much appreciated.
Colin Field Junior Organiser 2019 My junior groups start again on Saturday, 7 September at 10.30am. Please contact one of my team should you know anyone aged between 6 and 16 that maybe interested in taking up the game. Click here to get in touch. |
Hockley retain the Hornsey Cup
The winners of the Hornsey Bowl were Kay Walshe and Kay Warner with 41 points beating Gill Quick and Susie Lilley on a countback.
Alison Baker won the Midweek Ladies Medal with a nett 70 and Louise Spruce won the Ladies Stableford on Saturday with 39 points and is very pleased with herself as she now has a single figure handicap, well done Louise.
I am delighted to say the ladies team beat Royal Winchester at Hockley on Sunday 5 - 4 to win back the Hornsey Cup. One of the Royal Winchester ladies had a hole in one at the 12th and instead of buying drinks is going to donate to Naomi House and Jack's place.

Parkstone Trophy
A great win in the Semi-Finals of the Parkstone Trophy against the holders, Stoneham, who brought a strong side to Hockley. The event is for five pairs of foursomes for over 55's, played off scratch over 36 holes. We were missing three of our original team through holiday, injury and operations, but the squad performed really well as a team. Leading 3 - 2 at lunch with wins for Lawrence and May, Carpenter and Russell and Bell and Wilson. As the home side, we had to win at least 2.5 points in the afternoon (as a drawn match goes to the visitors). Lawrence and May had a wonderful win against England Senior International Alan Mew and one handicapper Martin Milne, while Carpenter and Russell had another win 2&1. The last pair of Bell and Wilson needed a half to ensure victory, but were two down with five to play, and one down with two to play -- they won the 17th and holed out manfully at the last to ensure the half required for victory. Marvellous stuff! The other pairings did not fare so well but took out some excellent golfers during the course of the day; team effort is the name of the game.
En route to the Semi-Finals we had beaten Parkstone away and West Hill at home, where Elliott and Hopper were unbeaten and Andrew and Whitfield had been in excellent form.
This prestigious final is on Sunday, 15 September at Parkstone and we will play either Frilford Heath or Hankley Common.

Sunday’s Medal was won by Kirby Sinclair with an excellent nett 67, beating his playing partner Mitchell Bligh on a countback.
