Greetings from Gary Stubbington
Hockley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

To wear, or not to wear, a hat when it is cold?

There are many myths about losing heat from your head as it only accounts for 7% to 9% of the body's surface so it's unlikely. But before you throw your collection of woolly hats in the bin, there's another finding to bear in mind: when the head is allowed to get cold and the body is effectively insulated, the body's core temperature drops a lot more rapidly than most people would expect.

Personally I hate being cold and always wear a hat and use mitts (national dress), we have a large collection of woolly hats and mitts from TaylorMade, Nike and Titleist in the shop now, along with Logo hats for both men and Ladies all at competitive prices.

JetSpeed Promotion

Again from my recent equipment survey over 44% of you have not changed your driver in the last 2 - 5 years, and with technology moving on to give you more distance and accuracy, now is the perfect time to come and try the TaylorMade JetSpeed Woods which I have on special offer.

The Drivers are £139, Fairway woods £99 and Rescue woods £89, so if you're looking for a club that promotes extreme velocity, swing speeds, club head speed and ball speed for maximum distances from the tee, this is the club for you.

The JetSpeed is the first driver to incorporate a 'Speed Pocket' into the design of the club head. This speed pocket doesn't speed up the face of the driver, but minimises the amount of spin you get from the tee giving you a lower trajectory and more distance. This 'Speed Pocket' still gives you outstanding distances and a noticeable power boost even if you catch the ball thin and gives you the purest strike from out of the centre of the club.

The full results of the John Simpson 2nd card played this weekend can be found in the member's area of the website, but the best score of the 3 days was Matthew Light on Sunday with 42 points.

We have a large number of uncollected headcovers in the Pro shop, these are prizes won by members playing in Monthly competitions, please check the list on the notice board.

Can I please remind you again, that competitions can only be played in 2 or 3 balls. 4 balls are NOT allowed, even if only one of you is playing in the competition. Playing in a fourball will result in disqualification from the competition.

To reiterate the Captain's e-mail with immediate effect 'All' Golfers must report to the Pro-shop prior to commencement of their round as this will enable them to monitor the traffic going on to the course, thus introducing the system as and when required. A simple way to adopt this is for the members to accept that the FTMS is operational at all times (Even though it may not be). Please familiarise yourself with the exact procedure of the booking system.

The winter league draw has now been posted on the website (member's area under club News) and in the foyer, please play your matches by 31st January 2015 and return your results on the sheet provided to the Pro team.

The Headmaster of Winchester College, Ralph Townsend, and the President of Hockley Golf Club, Bob Stilwell, conducted a short ceremony at 11am on the 11th November, attended by some 30 members, culminating in the planting of an Oak tree to commemorate Hockley Golf Club's Centenary and the outbreak of the First World War.

The Headmaster in his address commented that perhaps the rain and wind on top of the downs was a fitting reminder of the terrible conditions endured by many Winchester College old boys in the War, with 500 losing their lives.

Course Marshall

Over the last six months several steps have been taken to improve the pace of play at Hockley. Not teeing off from the 1st tee until the preceding group, have reached the green has helped and the various notices have raised members awareness of "Slow Play" generally.

A natural progression is a Course Marshall. It has proved successful at many clubs that have introduced it and we are keen to explore further.

If you are interested in finding out more please either phone or e-mail Marc.

Bar News

I reported last week on the success of the Sunday roasts, but the date of the next one should read January 4th, not the 11th. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

This coming Saturday there will be a food buggy coming around whilst you are playing, they will be selling bacon and sausage baps, tea, coffee and fruits, please take some cash out to play with you.

The Capt/Pro challenge began this weekend and what a start it was, it had everything!

A late substitution by Dave Martin for the injured John Walton with the not quite so injured Barry Murfin and Malcolm and Callum Mackenzie took on Robin and I.

Robin holed a 10 foot putt for birdie on the 1st and this was only good enough for a half. Both matches were tight, but after Callum unfortunately hit Barry with his tee shot on 10 we felt this may slow Barry down a little, this was not the case. After Robin and I had made par's on holes 10 - 16 we were one up on Dave and Barry and all square with Malcolm and Callum.

On 17 we had one of golf's little mysteries where all 3 drives we were struck down the middle of the fairway and we only found 2, the one missing of course - Robin's. On 18 we were now all square and 1 down, but Robin hit the shot of the day with a rescue wood to 10 feet, the resulting birdie good enough for a win in the match against Dave and Barry, however down the 19th against Malcolm and Callum, Robin and I were nearest in 3 to take the match.

Winter Foursomes 2nd round

Sunday, 23 November, please note the course will be closed until 10.15am

Inheritance Tax and Pensions Morning - Friday, 5 December

Come and join Tax Specialists, Ben and Nicky Gander from Gander Tax Services, and Independent Financial Advisor, Sam Neale from Station Associates, at Hockley Golf Club, as they provide a talk on the minefields that are Inheritance Tax and Pensions. There will be tea, coffee and biscuits provided, plus a buffet lunch afterwards. Doors open at 10am for a 10:30am start and there is no charge for the event.

This is very different to an estate planning event given by Wealth Management companies as all planning or advice is bespoke and tailored to each individual's specific needs. Don't let the government be your main beneficiary! Come along and see if you could put some planning in place - it is never too late and it is certainly never too early to plan how to protect the money that you have worked so hard for.

So we can get an idea of how many to cater for, if you would like to come along, please email nickygander@gandertaxservices.co.uk or call 01730 893039. Non-members also welcome.
