This week's tip comes from Chris about sloping lies.
Downhill Lies
Playing a round at Hockley you will come across a sloping lie, this week I am covering downhill shots.
When playing from a downslope, take less club because the hill de-lofts the clubface. Position the ball back a little and, as with the uphill lie, feel as if you set your shoulders parallel to the slope. (You might not actually be able to do this on a downslope, but that's the feel you want). If you don't angle your shoulders, your body will be tilted back relative to the hill, and you'll likely hit behind the ball.
Shots from downhill lies tend to go to the right because you're extending your arms down the slope. In effect, you're holding off clubface rotation, which can leave the face open at impact. But don't worry about releasing through the ball; just aim a little left to compensate.
If you have any game situations that you would like us to cover in future weeks' please click here to get in touch.
Winter league -
Due to the time scale in which the matches have to be played, I am now allowing you to play in 3 balls and play 2 matches at the same time, if it will make it easy for you. I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Adrian Nicol
Bar News
We had another successful weekend with the food buggy taking over £100 and serving 45 members, in addition we are now serving hot soup in a cup along with sausage and bacon baps and coffee. This venture will be happening every Saturday between 9-12 and on Sundays when there is a competition. So don't forget to have some money handy, as you will miss out on this excellent opportunity to refuel yourself
Now we are fully into winter work programs and you'll begin to see a number of changes around the course.
We have commenced the realignment of the 11th white tee and we will be turfing this next week along with all the other areas of paths and steps that have been removed in the last month.
The greens are now beginning to get their winter maintenance program, we try our very best to keep these operations away from the areas being pinned and putted on regularly.
Our scrub clearing program has re-commenced for the winter with some dramatic work already taken place between 15th and the 4th opening up some fantastic views down the valley and uncovering the huge earthwork on 15th. This is just one of the fascinating archaeological features Hockley has to offer.
Not only do these operations open up great views, improve chances of finding golf balls and increase airflow and light to our playing surfaces (which will help further improve them), but it will also have a large benefit to the ecology of the site as it will lead to a more diverse range of scrub and increase the vibrant habitant along the scrub edges.
If you are interested in our landscape policy it can be found on the website.
The St Andrews day stableford on Sunday had a good turnout of 48 people. There some amazing scores, but the winner in division 1 was Kevin Unsworth with an incredible 46 points!! He shot a gross level par playing off 10 and was cut 1.8 shots! Runner up with another gross level par was Mike Andrew shooting 43 points! The division 2 winner was Martin Mcintyre with 37 points.
Seniors News
The seniors had a Wessex winter league match on Monday against Corhampton, the match was halved after both teams had won 2 points.
We had a beautiful day for the Capt/Pro match this week, the sun was shining and the wind was down!
Robin as usual played fantastically and made some key putts, and he needed to as we were giving each pair 6 shots! We sadly lost 3&2 to John Clarke and Glen Clements, even after Glen hit his second shot on 14 left of the 5th tee and nearly onto the 4th green!!
We managed to squeeze a 2up victory against the Drayton brothers, it was a close game all the way round with very little putts being given!
I hope with Gary back playing Saturday they can get back to their 100% winning record.

Highlights of Winchester City Tour
A group of Hockley Ladies downed golf clubs and invaded the city of Winchester on a sunny Monday morning. Led by Kate Colwill, a Green Badge City Guide, 13 of us were expertly led around the parts of Winchester many of us didn't know existed! It is extraordinary how long you can live in an area and know so little about it: Kate soon put that right. She entertained and educated us brilliantly, leading us through the back streets and keeping us well away from any shops and the Christmas Market. She captivated us with her knowledge of King Alfred The Great, King Arthur and many other historic people and buildings associated with this former capital of England. Needless to say, after two hours of history, we adjourned to an old hostelry for a very welcome drink and bite to eat.
In appreciation of Kate's efforts, we raised £97 towards the Captains' Charity, MacMillan Cancer Support.
Amazingly the photo of the 14 of us makes it look as if there was nobody else at the cathedral - not so!
