Keeping you updated... Two weeks ago, Storm Ciara passed through and now we have also been battered by Storm Dennis. We have had the same amount of rainfall so far in February as we had in the whole of January - 90mm or nearly four inches! As a result, the course was closed on Sunday and Monday. We had trees down on the first over the public footpath and water on areas of the course I have never seen it before. We are making decisions on a daily basis in regards to course restrictions as the forecast is something we can’t currently rely on. Please contact the pro shop, course information line or website for daily course conditions.
Over the last week, we have been concentrating on finishing the rubber crumb liner, soil works and turfing on the last two bunkers from this winter’s course projects (second and fourth fairways bunkers). All eleven bunkers will then be finished. We then move our focus onto the newly built tee at the thirteenth and to installing sand into the bunkers at the third, which have settled down well as these were turfed before Christmas. The large area that was turfed through the middle of the fairway on the third has received its first cut. The height of cut will then be reduced over the coming weeks to get this established as fairway once opened.

A final plea...please do not use the putting green surrounds for chipping anymore, signs have been added to inform all golfers. Please use our dedicated chipping areas for practice.

It’s all gone wrong, we’ve lost a game... Our opponents this week, after a two-week forced storm break, were Martin Gill and Mike Henry with Andrew White and Alan Smith. Both games were closely fought and as ‘Smithy’ said half way round it’s all about the putting, which for me, in particular, didn’t bode well!
On a tough day, a couple of shots really made the difference, the first came on ten where Martin hit it in the field right, followed by ours out of bounds, Mike hit it through the green, Martin duffed it, then Mike duffed it, Martin chipped on and Mike holed it from fifteen-feet for a half! On fifteen, Mike hit a long iron into the wind to about six-feet and although Martin missed, I did as well for a par, so we went two-down with three to play. In the other match, Alan and Andrew were struggling just as much as we were and we managed to go two-up on fifteen, despite me missing from three-feet. Perhaps the shot of the round, was from Mike hitting a driver on sixteen to twenty-feet, an awesome shot which after we made four, finished our game in style. We halved sixteen with Alan and Andrew, and we parred seventeen to close out our match with them. A great game played in a great spirit.

Hole-in-one alert! Congratulations to Martin Gill who had a hole-in-one on Sunday at the fifth hole at Hockley - into a strong wind, Martin used a 7-iron to score his ‘Ace’.

Last week we revealed a remarkable statistic regarding the number of golfers playing grips that are over a year old, but what impact does that actually have on your game? Well, we decided to do some digging... |
| Tension whilst gripping | Grips are made from rubber and are prone to wear and tear, just like the tyres on your car. When they become worn, your grips will lose tackiness and your hands will start to slip during the swing, resulting in poorer shots.
The thing is, you’ll likely overcompensate by holding on to your clubs too tight, creating more tension and stiffness during the swing.
|
| Limited time offer in-store now | We know it sounds all doom and gloom, but it does make a huge difference to your game. That's why we're running this promotion at Hockley Golf Club, so you can experience the benefits of a new grip first hand.
There’s no catch, just pop by the shop before your next round to take advantage. |
