Match news Last Wednesday an event was held with Itchen College Golf Academy which has nine young members who are also members of our club. They enjoyed the hospitality and friendship of nine seniors and nine ladies, who volunteered their time to show the Itchen lads that we valued them as part of Hockley Golf Club. The format of the day was a Stableford three-ball team competition with the best two scores counting on each hole. The winning team of Steve Hill-Cousins, Debbie Emery and Danny Coombs won with 80 points. Danny, playing off five, eagled 18a, birdied hole five, and had a personal score of 39 points. Congratulations to them.

Prizes for the winning team and the runners up were provided through the kind sponsorship of the event by Bob Stillwell. Everyone enjoyed the day which was concluded in the clubhouse with a light meal. Our club president, club vice-captain, and senior captain all played, and our club captain also took time out to join everyone in the clubhouse. The Academy was hugely impressed by the way everyone had made them feel so much part of Hockley Golf Club and look forward to more similar events in the future.

Record-breaking... October 2018 - 50mm | October 2019 - 120mm. November 2018 - 80mm | November 2019 - 85mm. December 2018 - 90mm | December 2019 - 130mm. January 2019 - 27mm | January 2020 - 90mm. February 2019 - 50mm | February 2020 - 115mm. Total - 297mm | Total - 540mm. As the course conditions are currently wet and muddy in places, we have constantly reminded all golfers to be mindful of repairing pitch marks. Unrepaired pitch marks scar the surface and make it unsightly through the winter months. In addition, they are more likely to be attacked by disease with a weakened area around them.

Panic over, we’re back... After losing another two games to the weather, we managed to bounce back with two good wins against two very good teams. On Sunday, our opponents were Richard and Dave Gillespie with Grant Russell and Malcolm Mackenzie, as usual, it was very windy, but at last dry. We played the front nine, score-wise the best we’ve done so far only bogeying the fifth and parring the other eight, so we turned four-up on both pairs. After a couple of pars and then a birdie on thirteen, we managed to close out our match with Grant and Malcolm. On fourteen, the brothers made an amazing nett par after being in the trees by the fifth for two but we also parred fourteen and fifteen to beat the brothers. On Monday, we played Mick Cherrett and Trevor Atyeo with Mike Peet and John Bentley on another dry sunny day. Talk about how your game can change from one day to another. We were on the front nine, as far away from the previous day as humanly possible. After seven holes, we were five-down to Mike and John and two-down to Mick and Trevor. However, we did manage a slight rally, but after Mike and Trevor made a nett eagle on ten and then John hit the shot of the day on eleven lipping out from 160 yards giving them a nett eagle - we were back up against it. Mick and Trevor kept playing very solidly and put us out of our misery on the fifteenth with a birdie winning four and three. The other game went down to the wire and after a good up down on sixteen and the captain holing a nice putt on seventeen for birdie, we parred the last to win two-up against Mike and John. A good couple of days, let’s hope this dry weather lasts.
