Hello Golfers,

What a tense evening watching the golf on Sunday, at one point on the back nine, six players shared the lead, but an eagle two on the 16th saw American Collin Morikawa go clear. He emerged from a stacked leaderboard to win the 2020 US PGA Championship after a flawless final round in San Francisco.

The world number 12, who only turned pro last year and playing in just his second Major, carded a six-under 64 at TPC Harding Park to reach thirteen-under-par.

England's Paul Casey was two shots back in a tie for second with overnight leader Dustin Johnson after a 66.

Great golf and a good advert for TaylorMade, who are bringing out new products in September, which I will have to share with you next week as this week's newsletter is packed full of useful topics to help you get the most from your game.

Can you help?

John Fisher shot his age of 73 on Monday, I'm not sure if that's his age or the number of times he has played this month!

A number of clubs have been lost out on the course, so if you have picked any up recently and put them in your bag, please have a double-check and hand them into the pro shop. 


 
Competition news

Centenary Bowl

164 members played in the Centenary Bowl on a very hot Saturday and all were very grateful to Tom, Olivia and Alfie for keeping them well watered on the course throughout the day.

The winning team were:

Alan Smith, Grant Russell, Martin Osborne and Craig Parker with 106 points winning on a countback from Tim Bell, Sam Strange, Adrian Richard Bell and Jon Malone.

Congratulations to Stuart Humphries on his hole-in-one on the eighth whilst playing in the event, on what was such a busy day is probably why we didn't see him in the clubhouse afterwards.


Presidents Day

A full field accepted Bob Stilwell’s invitation to join him for his “cross country” event last Sunday.

Glorious weather, getting very hot towards the end of the day, saw 80 Texas scramble pairs play an interesting and different 18 hole course layout, well prepared and presented by Doug and his team.

With Tom, Olivia, and their team providing refreshments throughout the day, it was a most enjoyable time for everyone, and offering something a little different.

The “socially distanced” photo of our Captain Sean and his playing partners gives a flavour of the weather, and the smiles suggest that even their scores were not too bad at the halfway stage!

Congratulations to overall winners Sue and Paul Blackburn, the very first mixed pair to win outright.

The better back nine did it for them from George Stafford and Phil Bull, who claimed the first men's prize.

The ladies first prize went to Chris Quinn and Nicky Stilwell for the second year running.

The mixed first prize went to mother and son Jill and George Horton.

Well played everyone.

Issuing cards and maps etc plus collating all the scores were done by James, Adam, Tracy and Gary from the pro shop, and my thanks to them for everything.

As always, lots of tales to tell, monster putts and “what if’s” but everyone said how much they enjoyed themselves;...so did I.

Hornsey Bowl

Congratulations to all the Ladies that played in the Hornsey Bowl in scorching temperatures on Tuesday.

An excellent score from the winners Monica Finlayson and Rachel Grunwerg with 46 points.

Entry is still open for the Ladies Championship on Sunday, 23 August.

Think you're not good enough to be fitted?

The number of golfers who have not been fitted for their irons is far higher than it should be. We often hear golfers say they’re not good enough to get custom fitted, but we are here to dispel that myth and explain why getting fitted WILL improve your iron play.

Consistency is critical in your iron play and being fitted for your irons will give you this, plus improve your accuracy and make any errors less extreme.

There are so many factors that influence our ability to strike the ball better and hit the ball where we want it to go. One thing you may not have tried before is Titleist's T-Series iron range, which features two limited black finishes in T100-S and T200. These look incredible!
