The temperature has certainly dropped recently and hitting a shot with cold hands can not only be very painful, but your overall feel of a golf shot will be affected therefore affecting performance.

Mittens are easy to put on and take off and are used when walking between shots from tee to green. Most have velcro cuffs stopping the wind and rain getting inside meaning your hands will be nice and warm when playing your next shot. Team this with a handwarmer or two and there is no excuse to have cold hands whilst playing.

My greatest golfing achievement

If I listen to Rogers regular playing partners this could be my greatest golfing achievement, not only did Roger get every bunker shot out the first time, we took on a variety of different lies, different distances and spin, he even played a Mickelson, back of the club literally flat on the floor, full swing and the ball going about 10 yards with 2 yards of backspin, INCREDIBLE, wish I’d filmed that.

Before we started, to say Roger’s bunker play was poor would have been an understatement. He now agrees with me in that as I always say, bunker shots are the easiest shots in golf. If you are struggling with any particular part of your game I’m very confident that Adam, James or myself can help you get over any golfing issue.

Competition update

Who came out on top?

Saturday's Short Course Stableford was well supported and our winners were:

Division One: Jason Cattle with 39 points winning on a countback from Scott Couper.

Division Two: Geoff Wooton with 38 points.

A small entry into Monday's Long Course Stableford and the winners were|:

Division One: Alex Olney with 42 points.

Division Two: David Hogg with 39 points.

Champion of Champions

A record entry of 68 men and 12 ladies took to the field on Sunday to play in the Champion of Champions end of season competitions. Unsurprisingly, the brisk northerly wind, slick greens and a couple of tricky pin positions resulted in only three people shooting better than nett level par.

The winner of the Ladies' Champion of Champions was our Vice-Captain, Kay Walshe with a very commendable 33 points winning by four points from Ladies' Club Champion Judie Lewis. The win puts Kay's name on this honours board for a second time after her previous success in 2016.

In the men's competition, 2014 and 2019 winner Murray Carter finished in third place scoring 37 points with a superb 22 points on the back nine. Runner-up with 38 points and losing out on countback (20) was Chris Kokaram who was pipped at the post by Josh Hodges who scored 22 points on the back nine. This gives Josh his second trophy of 2020 after being part of the winning team in the Winter Knockout.

Unfortunately, due to the social distancing rules, Kay and Josh were unable to be presented with their trophies after play and there was no annual trophy presentation and meal in the clubhouse. However, we, fortunately, had fine weather all day so Tom and the catering team treated us to a BBQ with all the trimmings.

Again, as so many times this year, I have to thank the Pro Shop team of Tracy, Gary, James and Adam for all of their hard work behind the scenes in making things run smoothly, not just for this event, but for all of the competitions through the season.

Finally, I would like to thanks all members for the support shown towards the club in these difficult times. Entries into competitions have been at a record level and hopefully, we can count on your support again next season.

Ladies news

New members get together

On Sunday, 20 September, Monica Finlayson arranged a very successful get together for any new ladies who had joined the club in the last two years. Three teams went out consisting of seven new ladies and four long-standing lady members. We all played ten holes before coming into the clubhouse for tea and cake, and an informal chat about the different ladies competitions and events. It was a very enjoyable afternoon, and all new members received a ‘pack’ of information. We are hoping to repeat this venture next spring.

Congratulations to Kay Walshe for winning the Ladies' Champion of Champions competition on Sunday, 29 September. It was a record entry this year with twelve ladies taking part.

Finally, all the Major trophy competitions are now over for the 2020 season. Wendy Greenhalgh will be compiling the trophy winner list for this year, and this will be available for the Ladies Annual Meeting.

- Saturday, 3 October - Captain's Charity Day Team of four Stableford with the two best scores to count. Men Yellow Tees. Ladies red tees and ladies receive five extra shots prior to calculation.

- Sunday, 4 October - Ladies Medal and Men's Short Course Stableford.

- Monday, 5 October - Course maintenance week.

- Saturday, 17 October - Captain's Drive-In competition. The sign-up sheet is now open in the Pro Shop. Team of four Stableford with the two best scores to count.

The Putt Out of the Past captains will take place around 1.30pm followed by the Drive-In of the new Captains.

- Saturday, 24 October - The Autumn Texas scramble is open for entry in the Pro Shop.

Information and entry into the Winter Knockout will be released soon.

Golf on Tour

The big guns return

It’s been a strange year for the European Tour so far. Cancelled events, rescheduled tournaments and even new tournaments created. The pandemic hit the Tour hard and with relatively modest prize money on offer in the past few months, many of Europe’s biggest names have been Stateside.

This week will be different, though. The likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Ian Poulter will return for the Scottish Open following the conclusion of the big-money FedEx Cup and the U.S. Open. It should be an exciting week of top-quality golf in East Lothian. We can’t wait!
