Thank you to those of you that sent us messages on Jack and Megan's engagement, we have passed these on. Very little to report from the 'Stubbington' household this week, just the usual daily walks and indoor putting practice!

Lots of new products are being released in the next few weeks, some of which will be available from Hockley Pro Shop in due course, including the new PING G425 range, new Callaway Big Bertha and Epic range and new products from TaylorMade.

Coaching update

Last week when we went into ‘Lockdown’, I cleared the driving range of balls and boy did I find some in strange places! I would urge some of you to come and see me when we eventually return.

The online lesson booking is unavailable at the moment, but I look forward to helping some of you soon. James, Adam and I will be available for lessons and fittings as soon as we can and look forward to assisting you.

Beware of buying online

I posted this piece during the first lockdown in April last year and just want to reiterate; I personally do not agree that retailers should be allowed to continue to sell non-essential products online. This is placing more people unnecessarily at risk due to contact in warehouses, in distribution centres and during the act of delivering the products to people’s doors. This absolutely applies to golf equipment as it certainly comes under the bracket of non-essential during this period of lockdown.

However, there are other reasons I urge you to resist the temptation of alleviating the boredom of being at home by making an online impulse buy.

First, if you do not get fitted for the product then you could well be wasting your money; no matter how much of a bargain it may seem. Also, lots of outlets online, especially on sites such as eBay which are full of counterfeit products.

Finally, as a business that provides many services to the local community your support is crucial to our survival – now more than ever. We employ members of staff who depend on us for a wage. We do not pay that wage, you the customers do by supporting our business.

So please be patient, we want to serve you...and we will. Can’t wait to see you and help you when the day of freedom eventually comes!

We as the Pro Shop team, have been very lucky at Hockley and have been well supported over the years with some of the most loyal members anywhere, and this allows us to offer a good service and member’s facility. I think the next few months will be the most challenging we could ever have imagined, and we will greatly appreciate your continued support after this period.

Competition Update

Winter knockout competition

Unfortunately, due to the current national lockdown and the unlikely return to four balls in the immediate future, we have made the decision to cancel this year's competition.

The person who paid the entry fee of £16/pair will have the money credited to their bar card account and have to make the necessary arrangements to reimburse their playing partner.

The Golf Committee are sorry that they have had to make this decision, but extending the competition any further than the end of April would have started to impact on the Summer Knockouts and other Club competitions.

The Summer Knockouts will be available for entry from mid-February via the website and IG App. Please make sure you have sufficient funds on your club account, this can be 'topped up' via the app.

Golf on Tour

English top in Hawaii

Tour golf is very much a way of life and an unforgiving one at that. As recently as 2019, Harris English was struggling to return to the PGA Tour, having lost his card and been demoted to the Korn Ferry Tour (this is the feeder tour to the PGA, much like the Challenge Tour in Europe).

Now, English is a PGA Tour champion once again. The 31-year-old picked up his first victory since 2013 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, having fought off Justin Thomas’ pursuit of a third title in five years at the event. What an achievement, and one for the sentimentalists.

Major signing for Callaway

We'd normally try to build the suspense a little bit as to which player has chosen to put Callaway clubs in the bag moving forward, but the picture gives it away somewhat.

As you can see, it's world number two, Jon Rahm!

Apparently, the Spaniard carded a course-record 59 the first time he took to the course with his new bag. So, if you wanted to follow in Rahm's footsteps and give Callaway a try, it's available in the pro shop.
