With the clocks set to spring forward this weekend, it won't be long before we're out on the course playing some holes in the evening and the weather forecast on Monday is for only a 18% chance of light rain, I'm sure you would all play in the rain anyway?

Charity update

Donate to charity

Our 'Puzzle' swop shop is going well, especially with our ladies. If you have puzzles to donate, swop, or buy then pop them to the shop, we will be in tomorrow from 10am - 4pm, and of course back as usual next week.

All we ask for is a donation to the Captain's Charity, MacMillan Cancer Care. We will only keep this going for a few more weeks as most of you will be too be busy playing golf to do jigsaw puzzles!

Opening hours

The shop will partially reopen on Monday 29th from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and weekends at 7am if there is a men's competition on. We will be acting as your 'reception' area to administer tee bookings and for the sale of Range Tokens, please remember we sell drinks to Take away.

Can we ask that at least ONE of your group checks into the Pro Shop BEFORE you head to the tee?

Competition news

Summer Knockouts final call

The entry into the Summer Knockouts closes on Wednesday, 31 March (next week). Please enter through the IG App or the website. If you are having problems, please give us a call on Friday between 10am - 4pm or pop in from Monday, 29 March and we will enter for you.

Forthcoming events

Thursday, 1 April - Ladies Medal.

Friday, 2 - Sunday, 4 April - The John Simpson 3rd Card.

Sunday, 11 April - Masters Par 3 competition open to all members.

The competition will be open to 5-day members from Tuesday, 6 April at no additional cost.

19 tee times from 07:30 - 10:30 (at 10-minute intervals) are reserved only for those people who are playing in the competition. Should all of these tee times be taken by Thursday, 1 April then a further six tee times will be reserved until 11:30.

Entry will be via a sign-up sheet in the Pro Shop. You must email the Pro Shop (hockleygolfclub@btconnect.com) to request a tee time.

You may still play in the competition after the tee reservation by booking through the online system which will open at 19:31 on Sunday, 4 April.

The cost to enter the competition is £5 (£2.50 prizes, £2.50 Captains Charity) which will be deducted from your member's bar card on the day.

The course will be set up all day as 18 par 3's. If you are planning to play a casual round of golf, please bear in mind the layout of the course.

Golf handicaps when we re-start

29th March is getting closer, and the club has various bits of information to assist us with WHS. At the club entrance, near the tables for converting Handicap Index (HI) to course handicap (CH), there is also a table showing the further adjustment needed in many circumstances to take you to your playing handicap for the relevant competition. For singles medals or stablefords, this is 95% of CH.

Knockout competitions

Please remember to enter the Southgate or the American Tournament; where the Handicap Index entry requirements are mutually exclusive. As I said last time, it would be good to see more entries before the 31st March deadline; we are light on numbers.

Also, get out there if you can and enter the Pinsent (mixed knockout) where you can enter even if your handicap is higher than the limit: you just have to play as if your handicap is the maximum allowed.

Spring meeting

We have our spring meeting soon on 8th April (and 9th ) as an overflow which hopefully will not be needed) and I am looking forward to seeing many of you either then or over the next weeks. Not our usual format but thanks Wendy for your help, as always.

Pro shop

I was at the club with Tracy today, just after she took delivery of shop stock, including some more ladies clothing etc. We have had a recent email from the pro shop to all members, and I would suggest that we all please do our best to support Gary and Tracy after their hugely disrupted last 12 months.

On the move

You probably think of your trolley as just a handy way to take the weight of a full golf bag off your shoulders as you walk the course (which it is), but nowadays your trolley can also take a huge weight off your mind as you play.

New Motocaddy GPS trolleys

Last year marked a significant upgrade in the world of GPS electric trolleys, and this year is set to follow suit.

1-iron or hybrid?

No matter how good you are, it’s easy to feel intimidated when placing an old-school 1-iron or 2-iron behind the ball.
