How many of you stayed up to watch Jordan Spieth win the US Open at Chambers Bay? On a course that seemed impossible to love, Spieth embraced its quirks, its slopes, its edges and it's broccoli greens. Can he go on to win the Open championship at St Andrews next month? I think he can win anywhere.
Buggy Guidelines
Can we politely remind members of the Bye Law ruling 10.1 when using a buggy in a competition.
Buggy use in competitions is ONLY permitted with a valid medical certificate and the approval of the Golf Committee. It is for the SOLE use of the individual. Dispensation is required for each and every occasion.
Car Park
Can you please follow the directional markings when entering the car park and drive with caution if you turn immediately right to get to the driving range.
Last week's teaser - did you guess correctly?
Out of all the entries only one person correctly answered that it was Jack Stubbington on the 2nd tee at Hockley. Jack is very flattered that Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy were suggested, Justin Rose has played at Hockley, but not so sure about Rory!
Our winner of the sleeve of Srixon AD333 balls and a Srixon glove is Nigel Newman.
Pictured below is the before, taken a few years ago and the now, taken this weekend.

BREAKING 100
Your grip is more than just the way you hold the club When you're trying to break 100, you don't know what your problem will be on any given day. Keeping tabs on your full-swing grip and developing the ability to judge speed on the greens will quickly add consistency to your game and scores. You're not going to always hit good shots, but you'll be able to do more with your misses.
You've heard about grips that are too strong and too weak, but what does that mean? You want to form your grip so that both wrists hinge in the same direction. That'll automatically help you swing better. The creases between your hands and thumbs should point to your right shoulder. Grip it too weak-with the creases pointing at your chin-and you won't be able to hinge your wrists. Grip it too strong-creases pointing outside your right shoulder-and you'll snatch it quickly to the inside. Also, make sure you keep the handle in your fingers.
As promised, here are pictures of proud dad

Congratulations to
Emma Allen, an England Golf Team Member who played in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters at Nizels GC from 19-21 June. She played outstanding golf throughout the week and took the title 8 shots clear of the field. Emma played the first round 5 under CSS, the second round 3 under CSS, the third round 4 under CSS and buffered in the final round one over CSS.
A really fine four rounds or what?
England Golf has just published the Girls' Team for this year's European Girls' Championships at Kaskada GC in the Czech Republic from 7-11 July. Emma has been selected to be in their line-up and of course we wish Emma and the England Team success in Europe.
County 7's
On mid-summers day (and Father's day) Hockley's Men's County 7's team were successful in their home match against Southwood (Farnborough).
Southwood brought a team of fairly high handicaps - only one single figure handicap - which meant that most of the Hockley players were conceding significant shots in their matches (full handicap difference) - three players giving 8 shots, one 7 shots and one 5 shots.
However, mother nature 'smiled' on the Team, providing a course with hard fast greens, strong rough and a stiff breeze - the trifecta of Hockley's defence - which metaphorically blew the opposition away - aided by excellent play from the Hockley Team!
Howard Barton got the Team off to a great start with a 3 & 1 win against Southwood's only low handicap player.
Jason Cattle had another great win (5&4), and
'Loz' Hopper ran out 4&2.
Russell Clayton in his 'debut' for the Team won 3 & 2,
Nick Goater and
Rob Bailey had solid wins (3&2, 2&1 respectively). It was left to Southwood's last man, their highest handicapper to gain their solitary point in a closely fought game with
Keven Stansfield.
So the Team is now through to Round 3 - where a match against Blackmoor awaits. Date and venue (home or away) is still to be decided - please keep an eye out for it.

Ferndown home on 11 June in perfect conditions resulted in a 3.5 to 2.5 victory for Hockley Seniors, led by Vice Captain
Geoff and
John Walton with their 3&2 win against Geoff's fellow Lancastrian
Alan Barlow and his partner
Peter Olivo from Ferndown.
Steak pie, chips and posset went down well after the match! Apart from the usual after dinner speeches, this time, a New Scientist article offered interesting insight into the high incidence of crows being murdered by motorists near Manchester! We look forward to the return match at Ferndown on 23 September!
Vets 125 Match - Alresford
Captain Graham and Vice-Captain Geoff attended a seniors match at Alresford celebrating 125 years since the founding of the Club. We were honoured to play with the Club Captain
Terry Glynn and his partner
Henk Ribbink.
In the picture is
Graham Light demonstrating his fluid swing after being announced on the 10th tee by Alresford's
Len Lochrie. The ball finished some 8 feet from the pin to be gently coaxed into the hole for a birdie! A complex computer programme failed to recognise our golfing prowess while others were presented with suitably engraved glass tankards!
Knighton Heath Knock Out Trophy
Away on 15 June our valiant team were up against a well-honed bunch from Romsey.
John Taylor scored a challenging gross 75 (scratch 67) playing off 9 but not enough to win his match. At 8.5 to 1.5 (3 halved rounds) we'll have to wait until next year to try again. Hard luck fellas!
