Close Out Your Slice

Golfers who hit a weak slice have two basic problems: They cut across the ball with an out-to-in swing path, and they have an open clubface at impact. Knowing this, you can eliminate one of these problems--the open face--from the start, simply by turning the clubface closed before you take your grip.

To set the clubface in the same closed position every time, hold the club in front of your chest and visualize an imaginary clockface.

Do not grip the club and then turn the toe to 11 o'clock, as you're just rotating your hands and not closing the face.

Setting the clubface in a closed position before gripping the club ensures a closed face throughout the swing, producing more solid contact and a ball flight that goes left. Also, once your shots start consistently curving to the left, you'll adjust to your new ball flight by aiming more to the right and stop swinging from out to in. You'll figure out that you have to make a downswing from inside the target line to get the ball starting right and drawing to your target.

Once you've honed the proper swing path, you can return the clubface to the 12 o'clock position before taking your grip. If your slice ever comes back, you'll know how to fix it.

If you have any questions about your swing, or would like to book a lesson with one of our PGA qualified coaches, please chat with us in the pro shop or click here to get in touch.

'Oh no not the yellow ball' - Ladies Captains Day

The Pimms and nibbles stop became the venue to discuss the perils of having the yellow bonus ball during Ladies Captains Day which was played on the 18th June. It seems that many a player fell to pieces when it was their turn to take on the yellow peril. Tales of shaking knees, stiff swings and other such afflictions filled the discussions. Clearly it was a popular addition to the day! (must recommend it to Jean for next year)

Forty eight had signed up for the golf playing in teams of three on a fabulous sunny June Thursday. The starting instructions were jovially handed out by Steve Moore, Derek Sheppard and Bob Stillwell. The boys all wowed the Ladies with their cheery countenance and firm direction as well as, in Derek's case his dapper outfit.

Glen and his team had clearly taken extra special care getting the course looking fabulous for the day. It really did look a picture and a credit to the whole greenkeeping team.

After play, most poshed up in their frocks adding a touch of class to the occasion (let down it must be said by the Captain and Lucy Barraclough who said 'she knew the captain would not mind' if she did not change). Then it was time to relax from the stress of mastering the yellow ball and hence to the prize giving and afternoon tea.

Margaret Williams produced a fantastic display of table decorations in the theme of Ascot hats and a centre piece for the prize table suitable for a Captain called Moss who cycles a bit. Not sure I could go very far on that trike though.

The winners of the team prizes were:

1st - Alison Coulter, Polly Church and Kay Warner
2nd - June Glasspell, Ann Anthony and Kathie Killingley
3rd - Jill Hoarton, Lucy Barraclough and Brigitte Moore

Pat Munro, Sue Poulter and Judie Lewis shared the various nearest pin and accuracy prizes and that big show off Jill Hoarton marched away with the most birdies/eagles - having 3 birdies and an eagle on the day.

Everyone enjoyed the day which was a chance to catch up with friends, play a bit of golf, and enjoy the sun topped off with a lovely afternoon tea produced by Tina, Dan and the team. What could be better?

Ups & Downs

Triangular
Final scores
: - SWGC: 846. Hockley: 843. RWGC: 820

When you consider that, over 3 rounds with 27 scores counting, we only missed out by 3 points it was pretty close. We won the third leg at Hockley but overall the SWGC guys were more consistent. The triangular format was well received by all. Thanks to all Hockley Seniors who turned out for us over the 3 rounds for all their efforts. Well done!

Bramshaw (away - Manor course)

Lost 5:1 (our only winners were Colin Butterworth & Michael Gillies). Captain Graham blamed himself; a haircut before the match had apparently sapped his strength causing him and partner Henry to lose 2 down after being 4 up at the turn!! Hockley would still have lost though!

Waterlooville (home)

Our first (and last ... hopefully!) loss at home - 2.5:3.5. However, it did serve as a magnificent showpiece for our Seniors' Open. Several guys from Waterlooville have since sent in entries, having enjoyed the course so much.

Up 'N' Coming

Next match - Alresford (away), Wednesday, 1 July, Temperatures are predicted to be in the 30's. Phew - what a scorcher!!!!

Hayling (home) 7 July

QUICK REMINDER: Speaking of our SENIORS' OPEN on 1 September have YOU entered yet? Why not bring a guest or two along!

A small entry into the Men's Long Course stableford last Thursday and the winners were:

Division One: Danny Francis with 37 points, beating Mike Eames on a countback.
Division Two: George Gover with 31 points.

The winner of the Birch Trophy on Saturday was Mike Archer with a nett 67. Mike received an 'Exceptional Scoring Reduction' reducing his handicap to 8.6, his target was 9 by the end of the summer, so he is very pleased to have reached his target early.

The winners of Sunday's Men's medal were:

Division One: Mark Bowen with an exceptional nett 66
Division Two: Not to be outdone by his dad, Taylor Archer with a nett 71

A record entry into the Golfer/Non Golfer on Friday, 3 July, please collect your 'special' score card from the clubhouse before play. Click here for the start sheet. The tee will be closed from 5.30pm - 7pm.
