Jordan Spieth or Rickie Fowler
Who's Best Prepared for the British Open?
Jordan Spieth won the John Deere Classic on a traditional American-style course, Rickie Fowler won in Scotland on a links-style layout. How much value do you put in preparing for the British Open on a links course? Or will one of the British players such as Justin Rose come through? Let's wait and see, enjoy The Open.
On Monday, 20 July I will be attempting to qualify for the Seniors Open at The Berkshire's and if successful, fingers crossed, I will then play at Sunningdale, quite local and it would be great to see some of you there,
Lofting Your Short-Game Shots
Here's what creates trajectory -- and how to increase it
Loft in the short game is almost all produced by one factor: where on the ball the club makes contact. The closer you hit to the bottom of the ball -- accomplished by increasing the loft on the clubface -- the higher the ball will go. You can create additional loft on a sand wedge by doing one of two things at address: opening the face or lowering the grip end of the club.
Open the face at least a little on all pitch shots because that limits the exposure of the club's leading edge to the ground, reducing the possibility that the club will dig and catch the ball fat. With an open face, the ball will fly higher, but there's a trade-off: The more you open it, the smaller the effective size of the clubface -- and the more you lead with the shank-producing hosel, as you can see in the photo above.
The other way to add loft is to lower the grip end at address. This increases loft in much the same way as opening the face. The best example of this is on bunker shots, where a wider stance promotes a lower-than-standard hand position. One misconception to forget about on all pitch shots is that opening the face (or lowering the hands) makes the ball fly to the right. Hit the bottom part of the ball, and it will go straight -- and high.

Juniors, come and refresh your game, I will be holding a coaching session on Thursday, 13 and Thursday, 27 August from 10am - 11am. These are for junior members and will be FREE of charge.
Our match at home against HAYLING resulted in a 4.5 to 1.5 victory for Hockley. Fast greens with lots of borrow, the now luscious rough, local knowledge and of course Hockley Seniors golfing prowess gave us a significant advantage! A cold buffet followed with a little Light humour from Captain Graham about an arthritic ice cream purchaser with a nut allergy!

Away matches at WATERLOOVILLE and the reconvened match with ROWLANDS CASTLE are being played next week.
The winner of the Seniors De Souza and Scratch Cup played on Monday was Phil Mackie with a gross 75, nett 67.
ALL HOCKLEY SENIORS (qualifying age 60 yrs+) - if you haven't played with our motley crew yet PLEASE sign up on the notice board and come along; it's great fun whatever your handicap!
Club Championship
The Men's Club Championship was played on Saturday in glorious, but energy sapping conditions and David Ford was the man to step up and end Dave Lawrence's 4 year reign as Hockley Club Champion. David finished on 147, 5 over par to beat Dave by 1 shot. On a day when the course played extremely well, as it has all year, scoring was high, but that led to a close finish.
We had ages ranging from Roger Broadgate in his 70's to Taylor Archer only 13, all playing 36 holes. So to some of you 'younger' members who have said you were too old to play 36 holes, come and have a go, we hope to see you next year?
The Hodges trophy was won by
Howard Barton with a nett 140.
Our thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help make the day run smoothly.
Full results can be found on the club website or on the notice board in the clubhouse.
Knockout Competitions A gentle reminder that the completion date for the second round of the Pinsent and the third round of the Heriot is
Sunday, 19 July, the quarter final of the Jack Everard must also be played by this date and there will be
NO EXTENSIONS.
If your match has been played please ensure the result has been recorded on BOTH the draw sheet and the PSI. If the winners are not posted by the round completion date, the game could be assumed not to have been played and therefore both teams could be subject to elimination. WINNERS: please check that the win has been recorded
Ladies Championship Another era came to an end in the Ladies section on Sunday as
Helen Bailey, who is out injured lost her crown to
Bethany Goater. Beth shot 157 to win by 6 shots from
Janet Cuschieri.
The Ladies unfortunately did have ghastly weather for most of the day, but played on and enjoyed a very welcome warm meal after play.
Well done Beth, I'm sure this will be the first of many wins in your golfing career.
