Greetings from Gary Stubbington
Hockley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

How many of you were late to bed this weekend because you couldn't stay away from the USPGA golf? I was, although I found Saturday night more exciting than Sunday, the golf played was incredible.

Australian Jason Day won his first major title with a record score of 20 under par, he shot a closing 67 at Whistling Straits on Sunday to record the lowest total at one of golf's four majors.

The world number five saw off a chasing pack that included Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth, who finished three shots back in second place. That was enough to ensure the American, 22, replaces Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, 26, as world number one. McIlroy closed with a 69 to end his first tournament back from an ankle injury at nine under par.

A quick teaser Whistling Straits has over 1,000 bunkers, how many do we have at Hockley?

Course news

I have received several comments amount bunkers not being raked after play and pitch marks not being repaired. Can I remind ALL members and visitors to do this please, it's just 'normal golf etiquette'. I did include an article a week or so ago on how to repair pitch marks if you are unsure.

Coaching news

Please read the testimonial sent in from Damian Cain who had a lesson with me last Thursday and see what a 40 minute lesson can do for you.

Hi Gary,

I thought I would just drop you a quick note to give you some feedback on my recent lesson with you. As I told you at the time I have experienced a golfing summer of frustration. Not once have I managed to play to my handicap let alone contend for any prizes. In fact my exact record since 1st May read: PLAYED 10- PRIZE MONEY £0- SCORE TO HANDICAP + 59.

As you know some of my playing partners had been banging on about how good your launch monitor lessons are, hence I booked up with you. As painful as it is to praise a Pompey fan I have to say that the instant feedback that the monitor gives made it so easy to understand. That coupled with the 'tweaks' you made to my set up and alignment have worked a treat. I am both pleased and amazed to report a nett 66 off the white tees in the James Braid Medal at the weekend. It was good enough to make me bridesmaid but hey I'm not greedy.

Many Thanks

Damian

Tip of the week

DRIVING: KNOW YOUR ZONE

Start by picking a landing area for your tee shot-one you can realistically reach. This area should provide the best chance at hitting the green in regulation. With that in mind, a good driving zone often isn't just the fairway. For example, on a dogleg-left, the first cut of rough on the right is probably a great angle into the green.

Once you have your target, focus on rhythm and tempo. It's tempting to try to hit the driver as far as possible, but save that for the par 5's. A smoother, more controlled tee shot that finds the target area is going to increase your chances of making a good score.

What if you hit it wild off the tee? Switch gears, and get into damage-control mode. This is the time to follow the three-shot rule: You never want to take more than three shots to reach the green on a par 4. Use the second shot to get back in a good position, then knock the third on. Any time you're putting for par on a par 4, you can still help your score.

Competition news

A good entry into the James Braid medal on Saturday and the results were;

Division 1: junior member Callum Mackenzie - Chambers with a fantastic net 64.
Runner Up: Damian Cain nett 66.

Division 2: Sam Worthy nett 70
Runner Up: Ben Neville nett 71 beating John Baddams on a countback.

Monday's Long Course Stableford also attracted a good entry and the results were:

Division 1: Russell Clayton with 41 points
Runner Up: Laurie Beardshaw with 37 points.

Division 2: Craig Henley 40 points
Runner Up: Andy Eley 39 points.

Tri Centenary Revival Match

Last Wednesday saw the first playing of the Tri Centenary Revival match. This was contested between ourselves, Nevill Golf Club (Tunbridge Wells) and Shirley Park Golf Club (Croydon) all of whom celebrated their centenary in 2014.

Each team consisted of 6 men and 6 ladies and was played in 3 balls against the other 2 clubs. Our team Captain, Steve Moore, led by example and returned the highest individual score of the day with 38 points, but this was not enough to prevent the hosts, Nevill Golf, from using home advantage to claim the overall win. We did manage to finish in second place, albeit 20 points behind the victors, but are determined to put things right with a winning performance in next year's event which will be hosted at Hockley.

Many thanks to all those who participated.

Adrian Nicol

Junior golf

Juniors please remember there is a junior stableford every Friday during the school holidays, roll up at 11am.

So far we have only had 2 juniors enter each one.

Ladies news

North Hants Trophy

On Saturday, our ladies' scratch team of Chris Quinn, Bethany Goater and Janet Cuschieri beat Corhampton 2-1. Chris and Janet won comfortably, but Bethany's superb par round wasn't enough to beat Georgie Mundy's 5 under par round.

Everyone enjoyed the match and many thanks to Di Broughton and Jean White for caddying.

The team are now through to the semi-finals and finals day of the North Hants Trophy which will be held at The Army on Tuesday, 8 September. They will have a tough match vs Stoneham in the semis and then will face the winners of Basingstoke or Hayling if they get through to the final.

I'm sure any support would be hugely appreciated.

Beth was part of the Hampshire Girls squad who defeated Surrey and Kent to be crowned South Region Junior County Champions at Effingham Golf Club last week.

Well done girls.

Daily Mail Foursomes

Jill Hoarton and Jo Russell beat Broadstone away in the Daily Mail foursomes, but then lost in the sixth and penultimate round to Gosport and Stokes Bay away. Jill and Jo had to give 8 shots to their opponents who only dropped 6 shots in the twelve holes played. Let's try again next year!

Knight Cup

Gill Quick and Di Broughton unfortunately lost 3 and 2 in the quarter finals of the Knight Cup away at Highcliffe Castle Golf Club.

Senior section

CONGRATULATIONS - To Phil Mackie; overall winner (lowest gross 75, net 67) of the Seniors De Souza and Scratch Cup and Godfrey Shearing, winner of the Seniors' Cup with 37 points.

The annual John Charles Salves competition between our Seniors and the Ladies was postponed 'sine die' by mutual agreement, prompted by heavy rain and rumbling from on high! The JC Salver is one of two annual friendlies with the Ladies; the other being the Bunch Bowl. Struggling a little to get the numbers (8 per team), consideration may be given to perhaps replacing one of our duals with an annual triangular with the Ladies and Juniors?

Comments welcomed!!

This Week - we're taking on Rowlands Castle and Stoneham at Hockley.

2016 Matches - are nearly finalised and Captain Graham's pursuit of home and away friendlies with the Army (Sartoriuns) at Aldershot has born fruit!

Geoff Charnley
