Greetings from Gary Stubbington | Hockley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional | Hello golfers,
This week we welcomed two new members of staff to the bar team, Tabitha and Heather. We hope you make them both very welcome. On a sadder note we say goodbye to Greenkeeper Rob Curry and we wish him the best of luck in his new career.
Come and enjoy a coffee and cake next Thursday 24th and Friday 25th September and make a donation to the Macmillan Charity.
Your donations of a cake or cakes would also be much appreciated.
Awareness
The goal with every shot, whether it is a tee shot or a tap-in putt, is to advance the ball toward a specific target. Whether your target is a section of fairway, the green or the actual cup, how you imagine the shot in your mind is based on your awareness of a specific target. The swing is a response to the target, actually. When you're farther away from your target, you tend to swing faster with longer clubs. If it's closer, shorter clubs come into play.
One of the problems many players have is the inability to take their driving range swing to the golf course. One reason for this is, when you're hitting balls on the practice range one after another, it's easy to lose awareness of a specific target. This makes it easier to swing freely and your golf swing actually can get into quite a nice groove. But as soon as you hit the course and you start reacting to targets, you lose that freedom and things start getting complicated! The best way to improve your awareness is to practice with a target in mind-always.
This year's Hockley Tiger's Tour held its final round at Etretat. The photo was taken after their round at Champ de Battaille showing this year's tourists (left to right): Ian Napleton, Rick Arrowsmith, Kevin McArdle, Phil Ratcliffe, Paul Mantell, Paul Downing, Simon Forbes, Jeff Mardon and Martin Smith.
Prior to this they played at Golf du Vaudreuil (Monday) and Saint Julien Golf Club and were very lucky with the weather!!!
Martin Smith
The Ladies Centenary Trophy event was staged at Hockley last week and 84 ladies enjoyed the glorious sunshine. Blackmoor were the winners and Corhampton second. Many thanks to Sylvia Peach and the ladies for running such a successful event. My sale rail went down well!!
The winner of the Chilbolton Cup on Saturday was Sue Poulter with 37 points.
SALE - The 2014 reversible Gilets are Now Only £15 saving £24.99. Still some more summer bargains to be had as well.
Last Friday saw Hockley Seniors yet again turn the tables; at home against High Post! A 5 to 1 victory more than matched our 4.5 to 1.5 defeat away at High Post earlier in the year. The High Post guys were astounded by the speed of our greens that, yet again, proved one up the sleeve for Hockley players! An excellent meal with accompanying humour from Graham who told "the one about the lady taking coppers for a ride" (see p94) rounded off the perfect day.
Nearly there for another season of Seniors' friendlies; the postponed away match against Hayling is on 21st September and our away match against Ferndown is on 23rd September.
Long Course Stableford Results
Winners Division One: Gavin Williams with 42 points & Division Two: Steve Pullen with 36 points
Sonny Sharpe Trophy
55 members took part in the Sonny Sharpe Trophy on Sunday. With very little wind and quick greens the conditions were tricky, but the overall winner was new member Luke Hodgetts with a nett 68 in the morning and 40 points in the afternoon. Runner-Up was Duncan Barlow.
Many thanks to the starters and scorers and especially to Howard Gleadow for coordinating and running the event.

FootJoy Shoe Fitting Day
On Saturday we held the FootJoy shoe fitting experience in the clubhouse and out of the 25 members measured over half were wearing the wrong sized shoes, including Jack AND myself. We have both been wearing size 10 shoes when in fact we should be in 9.5 wide. Jack and I have now been fully trained in 'feet' measuring so if you were unable to make the fitting day and are unsure if you have the right size shoes then please come and see one of us.

Selecting the right ball for you |
Wherever you tee it up, we want to make sure you have adequate cover. With golfers being sued for shots that cause injury, it's not worth taking the risk - especially when you take out a policy through us, which will cost you less than that of an average green fee. Click here to find out more. |
