Greetings from Gary Stubbington
Hockley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Club news

Thank you to all those who made cakes and especially to those that 'ate' them. £255.49 was raised in aid of the MacMillan cancer charity. Well done to Jess for her efforts in organising the event.

Please note from the 1st October the bar and clubhouse will close 30 minutes after dusk.

The next Sunday roast is on 4th October and bookings can now be made in the bar.

Course news

Last week saw a couple of 'FOG' delays and the course had to be closed into the morning. The Pro team are in constant radio contact with the greenkeepers out on the course who give them regular updates every 15 minutes or so. Please be patient with all staff and we appreciate the inconvenience to your game, but it is for 'everyone's' safety that we do not let you out onto the course. Whilst waiting to play the club will offer you a FREE cup of tea or coffee.

Staff news

Thank you ever so much to everyone who donated to Naomi House & Jacksplace, it was a lot of fun to do the run! As a team we managed to raise £1 080, which made us the highest fundraisers for this event. Hockley members donated over £300 towards this total, so a massive thank you to you all!

At the event we heard from people who have benefited from the facilities at Naomi House & Jacksplace, and it reiterated how important it is to raise as much money as possible for charities such as these.

So a huge thank you again to everyone!

Megan

The picture shows Megan after the run looking very colourful, her T shirt was white when she started!

Shop news

Ladies the new range of JRB winter clothing is now in and a few summer garments remain on the sale rail. I believe this good weather is here for a little while, but it does tend to be chilly first thing in the morning. We have plenty of garments for both Men and Women to keep the 'chill' out, including Base layers, Gilets and lined jumpers and even Winter weight trousers. Also for the Ladies Hockley logo jumpers in 2 new colours.

Tip of the week

The term "Angle of attack" is something you may have heard of in relation to a golf swing. It refers to the angle the club head approaches the ball, looking at a swing face onwards. This angle will generally change and become less steep or downward the longer the club we play. The other point I would mention here is that very good players are aware of this angle and change it to be able to get the best from different lies. So if a ball is sat up on some fluffy grass they will become a little shallower and sweep the ball away.

The important consideration I want to mention is the angle that best suits a driver swing.

Here is a picture of a driver that is showing some scuff or roof marks. This leads to shots that just pop-up and go high with no distance. These marks and type of shots are results of swings that have a too steep and downward angle into the hitting area.

The ideal way to hit your driver is from a shallow rounded angle that gets you to hit the ball as your driver is working its way on the up-swing. Here are two ideas that may help you achieve this.

At the start of your downswing, feel as if your hands are working away from your shoulders in a nice rounded arc motion giving you good width into the ball. Make this transition nice and smooth. A great drill for you to also try on the range that will help you get the sensation of hitting the ball on the up-swing is to place the box from a sleeve of golf balls about 12 inches in front of the ball at address. Your intention is to then hit the ball and miss the box.

The popular Hockley Winter Foursomes is now open for entry. We are very lucky at Hockley in being a free draining course resulting in us not having a single course closure last winter despite it being one of the worst for many years. So in entering the Hockley Winter Foursomes we offer you the opportunity for some excellent winter competitive golf! This is an 'Open' event so please tell your friends.
